Depression is one of the most paralyzing experiences I’ve ever had. It is so powerful because the effects are accumulating and often chronic. It started with feeling sad then it grew, minute by minute, day by day until I felt depressed almost all the time. I lost all desire to live and it left me wanting to die. I hoped it would be soon.

For roughly 6 months my life was consumed by chronic depression. From August 1998 until about March 1999 I had depression that was so extensive I tried to kill myself multiple times. Anything was better than what I was feeling at that time. I just wanted relief. I went to doctors prescribed medications to stop the suicidal tendencies but the depression persisted. The drugs made me numb to life and nothing excited me. The depression was deep and everyone I trusted told me it would continue and must be medicated for the duration of my life.

What everyone was saying to me was very accurate, there was nothing anyone can do for depression that deep. The thing everyone failed to mention was there was nothing anyone ELSE could do to alleviate my depression. They all wrote off my symptoms as permanent wrote out a prescription and sent me on my way. No one told me that I held the key the whole time or what I had to do to open the door. I had to discover it on my own.

Perhaps those around me didn’t want the door to peace opened, perhaps they did. I like to think they wanted the best for me and simply didn’t understand where the door was. Are Depression and Anxiety Hereditary?
