Depression and Obesity

Stresses, anxieties, bad diet choices, lack of exercise – these are the first steps towards obesity. But not only this, the Bad Four potentially lead you to depression disorder as well.

When you start gaining weight, you become depressed by the fact itself. You feel guilty, ugly, lacking self-confidence, feeling like you’ve lost control of your life.

If you’re depressed and on antidepressant drugs as part of depression treatment, they also can contribute to you gaining weight, so you better check with your doctor to make sure you are on the right medications.

Also one of the symptoms of depression is gaining weight because you can’t stop eating as you feel in need of comfort.

Being overweight causes you to withdraw from your friends and family and from your community as people often judge you by your weight. There is a whole social stigma surrounding obesity – overweight people are harder to find a job, to participate in community activities, to live full life as they become less mobile. No wonder obesity and depression are often found together.

Lap Band Success

Would you like to change your ideas about losing weight and getting healthy from thinking about failing yet again to thinking about how you can do it this time? Do you understand how a shift from thinking about what you haven’t done, or what you can’t do to what you have accomplished can be a motivator? Would you like some ideas about how a successful lap band patient has accomplished this change in thinking and lost 250 pounds?

I mentor other lap band patients. I have questions asked of me that have me stopping and thinking hard, as well as those that bring me back to the time when I had the exact same questions and concerns. I was asked by someone why she wasn’t excited about her 80+ pound weight loss. She talked about her friend who had surgery and just gained 10 pounds, her doctor who told her relapses (weight gain) were normal, and her husband who seemed to be poised waiting for her to fail again like she had done so many times before. Sound familiar? Boy, it sure did to me.

I think in this past year I have finally stopped touching my body from head to toe when I wake up, not sure if the old, fat me, or the new, normal me is going to be there. Now I just reach for the space between my husband and I in bed, a physical space that hadn’t existed. Then I know that I don’t weigh 424 pounds any more. I listen to the people in my support network who have also had surgery lament about the few pounds they have gained, or how they are eating way too much. It is a familiar song when the days get short, the rain starts and it is comparatively cold here. We all share how we are going to get back up on the horse, plan our meals, work our plan and then miraculously (not really – we actually do the work) our weight is once again stable where we want it. I have had to learn that “normal” people have weight fluctuations. For me, the range is a five to ten pound window. It’s really hard not to fixate on weight all the time, not to remember the heartbreaking failures I have suffered over many, many years. I learned over the past six years that the world is not out there expecting us to fail. Those around me seem to be my biggest cheerleaders, anticipating my success. I make sure of that!

I had one of those moments we call non scale victories yesterday when I changed the sheets on my bed. OK, what in heaven’s name could I possible get out of changing bedding? Well, it went something like this- seven years ago I paid someone else to change my sheets – I couldn’t do it- the physical challenge was more than I could handle. Five years ago when I started taking more household responsibilities as I was able to move around more freely, changing the sheets became a job that my husband and I did together since neither one of us particularly liked doing it but we both loved the feel of crawling into a bed with fresh linens. Yesterday, I jogged up the staircase to my bedroom and changed the sheets while I was waiting for my husband to get his gym clothes together so we could head off for our workouts.

Did you get it? Rather than have to plan the ENERGY to get this household chore done, I just did it in the midst of doing several other things. Life is normal (whatever that means) for me and I don’t have to worry about having the physical stamina to do these simple tasks that others take for granted. This is miraculous when you think about it and talk with other people who are just starting on this journey. Life is no longer about planning how to get the mundane handled, it’s about living – sharing good quality time with family and friends, growing that circle and not worrying about gaining all of my weight back, but focusing on making good healthy choices so I can continue enjoying living. If I am human and make a few bad choices I can go back to the basics and use my lap band to help me make better choices tomorrow, and I do.

So to those of us worried about regaining weight, or failing again like so many times in the past, I suggest celebrating your successes each and every step of the way. Notice what is different each day, or if not each day then once a week. Find something positive in your journey and share it with a friend, your significant other or on line. It can only help you feel more secure in who you are becoming. Self confidence is definitely something that can be lacking in most of us who have spent our lives obese. We have to learn how to be self confident. It takes time. Be patient with yourself.

Digestion in the Human Body

The purpose of digestion is to free nutrients by breaking down the large particles in which most are located into easier forms little enough (and soluble enough) to pass from the digestive classification into the cells where they’re required. However, these nutrients are of no value if digestion is messed up.

Digestion incorporates a broad variety of mechanical and chemical steps that are appropriate to breaking down particular varieties of nutrients. How Obesity Can Affect Your Life

One of the hardest health issues to deal with is weight. There are millions of Americans who are overweight and many of these people are considered to be obese. In fact, obesity is a direct cause of hundreds of thousands of deaths each year. Thousands of these deaths are in people who have a body mass index (BMI) of more than 30. If a person has a BMI of more than 40, they can expect to have a much shorter life span than they would have otherwise.

When a person suffers from obesity, they are likely to have a number of health issues. They will probably have difficulties with many movements and will usually get very little exercise. Sometimes, it is even difficult for those who are morbidly obese to be able to even get out of bed. Obese people will be tired a lot because they have too much weight to carry and they are not getting the proper nutrition. And they often have difficulties breathing.

Health Risks Related to Obesity

When a person is obese, being overweight often becomes the least of their problems. Those who are obese face a number of health risks, including osteoarthritis, gout, gall stones, and sleep disorders. Some of the more serious conditions that can develop as a result of obesity include insulin resistance, diabetes, hypertension, heart attacks, strokes, congestive heart failure, cancer, and other conditions.

Insulin Resistance – One of the biggest causes of insulin resistance is obesity. Insulin is necessary for transporting blood sugars into fat and muscle cells. Fat cells are far more resistant to insulin than other cells and when a person is obese, they have so many fat cells that their bodies are not able to use insulin properly. This can lead to diabetes and kidney failure.

Diabetes – There are three types of diabetes, Type 1, Type 2, and gestational. When a person is obese, they are at a high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, also referred to as adult onset diabetes. This is more common in obese people who carry the majority of their weight in their mid sections, or are apple-shaped.

Hypertension – This is also referred to as high blood pressure and is a common affliction in people who are obese. Studies have shown that this is more common in obese women than in men, and again, is more common in those who are apple-shaped.

Heart Attack – Women who have a BMI that is higher than 29 are at risk of having a heart attack. Obesity in males and females is a leading cause of coronary artery disease, putting these people at a much greater risk of having a heart attack than those who have a lower BMI. If a person is obese and has already had a heart attack, the likelihood of a second attack is great.

Stroke – A stroke can be caused by hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes, all problems associated with obesity. Because those who are obese often eat foods that are high in fat, the arteries become clogged, and not enough blood gets through to the brain, causing strokes.

Congestive Heart Failure – This condition occurs when the heart is weakened and this can be caused by many things, including disease and obesity. A person with congestive heart failure also risks other health problems, including weakened kidneys, congested lungs, edema (swelling in the ankles and feet), and the intestines may not function properly.

Cancer – Obesity has been linked with certain types of cancers, including colon cancer in both women and men, rectum and prostate cancer in men, cancer of the uterus, and the gallbladder. It may even be linked to breast cancer.

Anyone who is obese needs to be seen by a physician regularly, because the obesity can cause a number of health problems to develop, and where a person has none of the above conditions on one visit to the doctor, they may have signs of one or more on their next visit. This is another reason why it is so important to try to do everything possible to take off the excess weight.

Dealing With Obesity

Pretty much anyone who is obese has probably tried their fair share of diets, only to find that they did not stay on them very long, or that they did not work in the first place. When a person is obese, their number one priority in life should be getting the excess weight off, in order to ensure their good health and a long life. Often, obesity can be dealt with through diet and exercise, but the diets are usually extremely restricted and those who go on them must want to lose the weight and have the willpower to do it. In many cases, there are people who are so obese that they must be hospitalized in order for their diets to be monitored, to make sure that they are getting enough of the right foods and none of the foods that will not be good for them.

For many people who are obese, they are able to lose weight through a healthy diet and exercise program. For many others, it is not always quite so simple. There are many people who are considered to be morbidly obese, and in a lot of cases, bariatric surgery is recommended. With so many weight loss supplements on the market, no wonder a potential weight loser finds himself or herself in a dilemma what to choose. Some of those products and the documentations that come with them are so confusing that you have to be a new Einstein in order to understand what it’s all about. First there are so many approaches to losing weight and the approaches do not depend on individual wish or option but on the sources.

I mean sources because you have to know exactly what the cause of obesity is in the first place then you go on and tackle the problem right from the root. In this article, I will try to demystify and clarify the steps one by one.

Causes Of Obesity:
This is the most important factor if you want to fight obesity. Knowing your enemy and from where he comes make defeating him an easy task.

Many people put on extra weight because they just can not refrain from putting anything that spells food into their mouth. They nip on peanuts, cookies, and all sorts of junk food just to be happy. In Eastern Europe, people much away on fried sunflower seeds which is very very addictive. The question is, are they really happy? This mania is in a layman’s dictionary simply called food craving. They are not hungry nor do they lack the necessary nutrients to keep the body going but they just must munch. This may be due to psychological factors which are not in the scope of this article. OK we have found our first enemy now what?
There are many ways to combat food cravings. If you have ever heard of the term “self discipline”, this is where you can put it to task. A good way to determine whether you are self disciplined or not and this phenomenon is not peculiar only to weight loss but to almost every other aspects in life. The most successful people have a high degree of self discipline no matter in what arena. A little bit of philosophy there.

First the hardest part is to refrain. Try as hard as you can to take your eyes off those things you love to eat. 3-5 seconds are enough to break your defense. If you can get your eyes off and stay off then you’ve just made your first step towards defeating food craving.

Next, if you are the working type, direct your thoughts only to your work. Don’t if you can afford it engage in those work place gossips as in the meantime a colleague may offer you something you will find hard to refuse.

Don’t keep coins and changes in your wallet. Yes, at the office, there is that slot machine just by the entrance. If you have quarters etc. you will be tempted to slot in and then you have fallen.

As a last resort. If you have expended all your efforts to quit munching and not enough will power to refrain fro food cravings, then there are the options of organic products that can help you curb those food cravings.
