Cutaneous Lymphoma

March 6th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

Cutaneous lymphoma is a type of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma involving the lymphocytes within the skin, specifically T-cells and B-Cells. This is a rare type of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma where the tumor growths are seen mostly as numerous lumps beneath the skin’s surface and not in just a lymph node.

The lumps formed beneath the skin cutaneous lymphoma are due to a collection of the malignant cells in the skin. In an attempt to purge the system of the mutated cells, the body pushes the clustered malignant cells towards the surface of the skin. The most common type of cutaneous lymphoma is the cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. The disease manifests itself in several stages:

  • Pre-tumor stage – the skin is presented with raised, red patches that appear on the breasts or buttocks and somewhat mimics the appearance of other skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.
  • Plaque stage – the patches are now irregularly shaped and can appear anywhere in the body. Hair loss in the affected skin area is also noted, and can be permanent if the condition is not treated.
  • Tumor stage – the incidence of people progressing to this stag is quite small. The plaques can now form lumps and even ulcerate. Lymph nodes are also affected. The liver, lungs, and spleen is also at risk of being affected by the cutaneous lymphoma, but the cases are quite rare.
  • Sezary syndrome – this is when the malignancy has spread and covers a large skin area. The malignant cells have also metastasized in the blood stream. Some patients have no plaques or tumors, but the entire integumentary system may be swollen, red and sore (l’homme rouge). The skin can also manifest desquamation or peeling off of skin.

Cutaneous lymphoma of T-cell origin is treated through a specific or a combination of treatment modalities that can range from topical or local to systemic. PUVA treatment is a combination of psoralen and UVA. After taking psoralen, the patient enters an enclosed room where rays of UVA is applied on the skin. However, extra care must be given for it is known that exposure to UV rays can predispose a person to skin cancer. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy is also done to help cure cutaneous lymphoma.

Cutaneous lymphoma can be hard to deal with for it can cause some severe changes in your appearance. A support group can help you combat the disease both in its physical and psychological aspects. Talk to your friends and family during hard times, and ask your doctor to refer you to a cancer support group to help you understand and cope with the effects of cutaneous lymphoma.

Quit Smoking and Lung Cancer

March 4th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

If you come to know the smoking and lung cancer statistics then you may think twice before smoking again. There are many people who get affected with lung cancer daily around the world. Smoking is one habit which you do not want to give a long run because in the near future it will for sure kill you without giving enough warnings.

Smoking cigarettes is injurious to health as we all know, but the fact that most people fail to comprehend is that smoking affects our health well beyond reparable limit. Once the lungs are affected then it becomes something which we can’t get it back to the old normal state. You will reap lots of benefits from quitting smoking. The benefits range from normal functioning of your heart and lungs to decreasing the likelihood of having a heart attack. The key to successful quitting smoking is to have the determination to be on the right path. There are many sure-fire way to eliminate the habit of smoking and if you follow them without relapsing then you are sure to quit smoking in the near future.

The toxic element that is responsible for the decline of good health is the nicotine which is added in the cigarette to deliver that extra kick. The other thing which greatly helps you to spoil your health is the carbon monoxide. This is the gas that is ejected out of vehicles when we drive them. The carbon monoxide is as poisonous as any gas. Nicotine is a substance that develops a craving deep inside you. It is like any other drug which makes you addicted to it. If you keep smoking then there are lots of chances for to lose control over your body health in addition to the body shape. You will look skinny which is not so good and there are possibilities for you to age quickly which results in wrinkles etc. this is very unhealthy and you got to be stopping this as soon as possible.

There are treatments for lung cancer but the thing is that those treatments are as serious as cancer is. Most of the people are unaware of the fact that these cancer can grow if left untreated, so it is good for you if you check you health twice a year and if possible stop smoking as quickly as possible. Quitting smoking is easier said than done but if you have the right determination then you can go places no matter what other say.

The news is that almost one and half billion of human beings are affected with this lung cancer and some of them are getting cured with the advent of latest developments in the technology. The good thing is that if you diagnose the ailment in its initial stages then there are high possibilities of getting rid of the cancer. The shocking news is that in the previous year alone about million of new cancer cases were diagnosed. Lung cancer has been the greatest hurdle for most centuries than any other type of cancer.

Asbestos Related Disease

March 3rd, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

Asbestos Related Disease Are you ever concerned about what you might be breathing in? Along with all the second hand smoke and pollution on Earth, we should all be a little bit more concerned about asbestos. For starters, asbestos is a fibrous mineral, either amphibole or chrysotile which are toxic minerals formerly used for making incombustible or fireproof materials which can be found in buildings and thousands of products(Mesothelioma, asbestos cancer, feb 28 2010). Asbestos can cause a number of related diseases and cancers such as Mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer and asbestosis. Although just being around products with asbestos is not harmful, when these products are damaged and released into the air, breathing in this mineral can be extremely harmful to the lungs. Many people who develop cancer from it do not even realize they are breathing in this deadly mineral(Mesothelioma and asbestos awareness center, asbestos cancer, december 5,2009).

Most people are unaware of asbestos being around in their everyday lives. Do you have a house that was built prior to 1989, or do you have older appliances? If so, then you have a very high chance of having asbestos in your furnace, pipes, floor tiles, cement walls or roofs, stove top pads, ironing board covers, hairdryers and the list goes on(Environment health and safety online,Where is asbestos commonly found in the home, when and how should it be removed,February 28 2010). You wont find asbestos in this items after 1989 because the government banned it from use, but you’d be surprised as to how many homes this does effect and how many people are simply unaware. On the day of September 11th 2001, asbestos became a much larger concern when first responders who were perfectly healthy before the crash of the twin towers started to develop asbestos lung cancer and mespthelioma. These first responders who are hero’s to most were not even told that the air was unsafe to breath, even when the government knew the buildings were filled with asbestos minerals as being built before the minerals were banned. As a result hundreds of firefighters have died and we anticipate the number of deaths to exceed the number that died on September 11th(Rt top stories,Hundreds of 9/11 first responders die of cancer, february 28 2010). Asbestos is not visible to the human eye so anyone could be breathing it in at any given time. Our mind is set up only to fully recognize survival aspects of the world so these other little details go unnoticed. In other words we only perceive 1 trillionth of reality(Ornstein,Robert and Dewan,Ted.”Mind Real”. United States,2008). More times then often when asbestos is in the air it’s a small enough amount that there will not be any noticeable damage or discomfort, but over long periods of time, breathing in too much can be deadly.

Breast Cancer Alternative Treatments

February 27th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

All kinds of alternative treatments and natural remedies are getting more and more popular. This is mostly very positive but it can have some negative sides. The more people learn about different treatments options the better. People who have breast cancer need all the help they can get and every little detail, can become very helpful. Should you be using breast cancer alternative treatments?

Everyone knows how dangerous, expensive and ineffective conventional treatments are, so it is natural that people look for ways to heal themselves more effectively. That really is the goal for people – heal themselves. If there is something more effective and safer that traditional chemotherapy, surgery and radiation, then people will use them.

I guess that the main danger with various alternative treatments and remedies, is that you never really know what works and what does not. Certainly there are people, who take advantage of people, and sell them worthless junk, that is suppose to be an effective remedy for breast cancer. But then again there are people, who are honest and have done extensive research into various breast cancer alternative treatments. There is no magic pill that will eliminate cancer, but there are certainly many things you can do, to reduce the symptoms of traditional cancer treatments and make them more effective.

Diet and exercise are very important and they can make a very big difference. Women who have a proper diet, which includes essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients, and who exercise regularly, have a much bigger chance to beat cancer. Exercise can increase energy level, reduce stress and depression. It is recommended by doctors to have a diet, that is high on fruits and vegetables, such as cruciferous vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower, and kale. and low on animal fats.

This is not much but all of these little details can become very important later on. Is your diet what it should be? Are you exercising enough? Cancer cells thrive in some condition and suffer in other conditions. So the goal is through proper diet, supplements, natural remedies and treatments to make conditions, where the cancer cells can no thrive. There are so many things you can do yourself, to stop the spreading of cancer cells.

The goal is not to replace conventional treatments all together and replace them with breast cancer alternative treatments, but to combine them and make the fight against breast cancer more effective. People should work together and not get stuck in their beliefs, how things should work in their mind.

Colon Cancer Screening Test

February 27th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

Though we see an increasing number of cases, it is rare, accounting for only 1 to 4 percent of all breast cancers. Colon Cancer Screening Test Overall survival is worse in women with this kind of breast cancer than in other forms of breast cancer. It is inflammatory because its initial manifestations are usually redness and warmth in the skin of the breast, often without a palpable lump. Oftentimes, the patient and even the doctor will mistake it for a simple infection and she’ll be put on antibiotics. But it doesn’t get better. It also doesn’t get worse and that’s the tip-off: an infection will always get better or worse within a week or two – it rarely stays the same. If no change seems to be evident, the doctor should perform a biopsy of the underlying tissue to see if it is cancer.

An asymptomatic breast cancer patient was breast-feeding and developed what her doctor thought was lactational mastitis or inflammation of the breast brought about by breast-feeding. It never cleared up and did not hurt much – there was no fever sign of infection. It hadn’t gone away or gotten worse in six months. Another patient, not breast-feeding, noticed that one breast had suddenly become larger than the other; there was also redness and swelling. In both cases, the doctors at first thought the women had breast infections. So if the symptoms continue after treatment, you should ask to have a biopsy done of the breast tissue and of the skin itself. With inflammatory breast cancer, you have cancer in the lymph vessels of your skin, which makes the skin red. An internet survey done on women with the disease by a man whose wife had died of inflammatory breast cancer showed that most women said they wished they had known that when there is redness of the breast skin unresponsive to antibiotic therapy, this is indicative of inflammatory breast cancer. Probably their doctors were not breast specialists and did not know about this unusual type of breast cancer.

Inflammatory breast cancer is the only kind of breast cancer that virtually everyone agrees doesn’t call for mastectomy as its sole primary treatment. Because it involves the lymphatic vessels of the skin as well as of the breast tissue and the skin is sewn back after mastectomy (surgical removal of the breast), doing a mastectomy will leave a great chance of recurrence in the skin. Chemotherapy would be treatment of choice for this type of breast cancer before any local treatment can be entertained.

The incidence of inflammatory breast cancer is quite variable. Women with this cancer tend to be significantly younger than those with other breast cancers and African Americans with this type of cancer tend to be younger than Caucasians.

As with all advanced cancers, chemotherapy is started with three or four cycles of Adriamycin and Cytoxan with or without Taxol or Taxotere. After which local treatment can be done – usually in the form of mastectomy. After mastectomy, most women will receive four more cycles of chemotherapy followed by radiation therapy to the chest wall. Serious though it can be, inflammatory breast cancer is still an extremely variable disease.

Breast Surgery: Cancer

Breast Cancer in Younger Patients

Say the words breast surgery and many people will think either plastic surgery or breast cancer. These are the two most prominent reasons for breast surgery. However, breast care is also another part of the breast surgery field that many people forget. The prevention of breast problems, breast cancer in particular, is something that many surgeons advocate.

Recently, however, there has been more and more cases of breast cancer in younger women-even young girls and boys! There are a few reasons for the phenomenon, of which have breast surgeons and the breast care field pushing prevention and detection methods.

Early Detection

Although age 40 opens the breast awareness, women as young as 20 are being encouraged to begin self-examination to help in early breast cancer detection. This is because breast cancer was found to be one of the top killers of women under age 40. Many people dispute these numbers because only 10 percent of the 250,000 women diagnosed annually with breast cancer are under age 45.

The problem is that the cancer is not detected in younger women before the tumors reach the critical stages.

Risk Factors

One of the most important indicators for early onset of breast cancer is:
the presence of breast cancer in the young woman’s health or family history.

A defect in the genes, a BRCA1/BRCA2 gene mutation actually increases a young women’s chance of getting cancer.
The number of biopsies performed on the breast.
The age of the woman at her first period.
The woman’s age at which she had her first child

If a doctor determines that, the young woman’s risk factors for early onset of breast cancer, then screening can start at any age. Others are encouraged to perform self-exams and get regular screenings starting at age 40.

Other Complications

Younger women also have denser breast tissue, which makes detection more difficult, even using a mammogram. Child bearing accelerates the growth of breast cancer tumors. Thus, small lump can become aggressive and spread quickly while the woman is pregnant.

Awareness Breast care professionals agree that the number one hindrances to early detection are awareness. Many young women do not know that their family history can put them at risk for early breast cancer.

Others do not know to check for lumps through self-examination. Thus, breast cancer awareness is very important in detecting the cancer before it spreads to other parts of the body. It is estimated that cancer detected early gives 90 percent of all women the chance of survival.

Treatment

Breast cancer treatment is the same no matter the age of the woman. A lump is usually removed during surgery. During the lumpectomy, tissue around that lump is also taken to ensure complete removal of the cancer. A mastectomy is also used. The breast is removed to prevent the spread of the cancer to other parts of the body. The breast surgeon will also examine the nearby lymph nodes, removing those that may have been affected by the cancer.

Radiation therapy is used after a lumpectomy to kill any remaining cancer cells. After a mastectomy, chemotherapy follows. Hormone therapy may also be needed to ensure that the cancer will not return.

Breast Cancer in Children

Although breast cancer largely affects adult women, cases of breast cancer in children and even men are not unheard of. It seems that the reports of breast cancer in children draw more attention. A case reported in May 2009 of a 10 year old girl with breast cancer did just that.

The girl was said to have invasive secretory carcinoma, which is rare in children. She reportedly underwent a mastectomy and then chemotherapy to rid her body of the disease. In fact, breast cancer in males of all ages is extremely rare. Secretory carcinoma is form of cancer was also found in a boy age 17, which is said to be even rarer than findings in girls. The average age of diagnosis for secretory carcinoma is 25. However, it is still called juvenile breast cancer.

Despite the moniker, any breast cancer in children is very rare. Secretory carcinoma makes up one percent of all breast cancer case for all sexes and ages. In addition, the age of the patient does not change the course of action for eradicating the cancer. Other than genetic mutation, there is no evidence that breast cancer in children is caused by the food, the environment, pesticides, etc.

Plastic Surgery after Mastectomy

Another area of breast surgery is plastic surgery after mastectomy. Many mastectomy patients elect to have implants placed after the removal of the breast to fight cancer. It restores the breast to a natural look. This is done to not only boost the mental wellbeing of the patient but also to provide a return to one’s physical appearance. It also helps patients to avoid the use of breast prosthesis.

Skin Cancer Surgery, Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy

February 19th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

There is just one chance that you get to create a first impression. And often the person who manages to project the best image the first time creates the best impression. However, if you are suffering from skin cancer then you do get a second chance with the help of skin cancer surgery.

There are some general rules for this surgery. The treatment of skin cancer depends on the general state of health of the person suffering, age of the patient, location age and most importantly the cancer type. This treatment is performed by the skin specialist i.e. the dermatologist.

The different type of treatments for skin cancer includes:

· Surgery

· Chemotherapy

· Radiotherapy

· Medications and others

Surgery

This is the most common treatment option for skin cancer. Very often this surgery is performed in the outpatient ambulance as it is only a small ambulatory procedure. The treatments performed are:

· Excision: These are small tumours which can easily be excised with the help of scalpel. This treatment is performed under local anaesthesia. In this treatment the cancer along with a small amount of healthy tissue around the affected area is excised. This is to ensure that all cancer cells are removed completely. The resulting wound is sutured and is removed after few days.

· Cryosurgery: In this treatment liquid nitrogen is applied on the cancer to freeze it. These are often used for small pre cancerous growths and are a painless procedure.

· Curretage: The treatment is done by scraping the lesion with a sharp instrument. It is then treated with electrodessication to kill the remaining cancer and to stop bleeding.

· Laser: It is used to remove small superficial cancer

· Micrographic Surgery: In this process cancer is removed layer by layer. Before removing each layer it is checked under microscope if it contains cancerous cells. This method is generally used for large and aggressive cancer forms.

Chemotherapy

This treatment is about treating the cancer with the help of anti cancer drugs. There are two types of it:

· Topical Chemotherapy: It is a cream or lotion that contains anti cancer drugs. This lotion is applied on the cancer. These are used for small and superficial cancers.

· Systematic Chemotherapy: It is used in case the cancer spreads to other organs. In this treatment the anti cancer drugs are administered in the form of intravenous injections, intramuscular injections and pills.

Radiotherapy

In this treatment process the cancer cells are killed with the help of high energy X-ray beams. This treatment is usually performed for cancers on the face which cannot easily be removed with the help of surgery. It is a painless procedure.

Medicines and Other Treatments

Apart from the above mentioned procedures for skin cancer there are other therapeutic procedures which may also prove to be effective. These are the PDT or Photodynamic Therapy and the Cancer Immunotherapy.

With the help of the above mentioned procedures you can have your skin cancer treated.

Innovative Prostate Cancer Treatment

February 12th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

The good news about prostate cancer which differs from almost all other forms of tumor; is that it is generally slow to metastasize and with early detection, treatment and aftercare, there is a very good chance of containing the spread and hence; treating the underlying condition.

When it comes to alternative prostate cancer treatments – thankfully there’s an extensive amount of research currently underway into certain drugs for certain forms of the condition. Alternatively, other hormonal tests, studies & research based on testosterone levels in male candidates – is also currently being pursued. It seems highly likely that like many other cancers, with prostate cancer, it is vital to catch it before it metastasizes (or spreads from the prostate gland around the body) after which point there’s little doctors or aggressive treatments can do.

This is why it is wise for patients or potential patients to become familiar with alternative treatments at every stage and all relative alternatives, as soon as any of the symptoms become known.

While a lot of work is going into establishing antibodies that will hopefully help minimise the need for radiation and surgery, there are also a lot of other established alternative methods that have proven their worth and can be explored in each individual case. Among these is a strict change in diet, where certain foodstuffs will be added, such as a higher percentage of fruit and vegetables and some will be taken away. Dairy products in particular are not good for this type of cancer and with the help of a specialist, may indeed be eliminated entirely from the diet.

A lot of cancer treatments will heavily depend on age. For example, doctors and oncologists may be willing to try aggressive forms of treatment on young middle age men, whereas, the same condition on a person over seventy for instance, will be dramatically different. The biggest concern with prostate cancer is keeping it contained within the prostate tissue, and if this can be done successfully, the chances of survival will be greatly increased, as again, it is a slow tumor to develop.

For a full list of information and details about the different kinds of treatments available for prostate cancer sufferers, patients are advised to first visit their GP, as well as perhaps checking online for the best alternative solutions and advice, thus; maximizing every potential for cure.

Importance of Early Detection

As prostate cancer is very much a condition under the current spotlight, the dangers, as well as other forms of cancer, are that once it has spread from the tissue in the prostate gland, there is very little doctors can do, and so, your doctor may want to begin trials immediately after a full screening. The bigger options of course, for any kind of cancer are chemotherapy and surgery; however, these are not looked upon for this kind of cancer as a first option. The best advice perhaps is to look around for as many alternatives as you can find initially, while you begin consulting with your GP.

It is also worth noting that there are dedicated doctors and specialists that can be found online to help answer any questions you may have prior to beginning any form of traditional or alternative prostate cancer treatment, but please be aware that early detection and treatment is always the best route.

Lung Cancer Treatment Options

February 9th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

Are you looking for a fresh approach to treating lung cancer? If so then you should know that there are many lung cancer alternative treatment options. Fighting lung cancer can seem like an endless battle. This is hard on the individual that is fighting the lung cancer and for the family as well. It can be a trying time for all involved.

Many people are looking for alternatives this is because some traditional treatments not just work on killing the cancer but it also is toxic and hazardous to the patient. Chemotherapy for example, can cause hair loss it can cause the patient to be very sick and can also make the patient feel totally drained. It causes severe side effects. Many people are looking for away around this and are now starting to turn to lung cancer alternative treatments to fight cancer. There are many different natural means that you might want to try.

One alternative is to try a different diet. There are many different herbs, foods, and drinks that can help with trying to rid your body of cancer. An example of a diet that might be recommended for prevention and treatment of cancer is a diet that is high in fiber. There are many different foods that you can find that might be high in fiber that you could eat. Some of these are the cereal Mini Wheats, brown rice, wheat pastas and bread and more. These could help you if you are looking for a natural diet alternative. You could also try a diet high in Vitamin D. You could look on the internet for foods or drinks that might be high in Vitamin D. Of course these are only a few of the diets that you could use for a natural approach.

If you are looking for treatments that don’t include diets then you can try a few different methods. One of the methods that are a natural approach without having to take any chemical medications is oxygenation. This is supposed to aid in killing the cancerous cells. It has been a proven method that many are now looking to use. There is also another method that may work for you and this is detoxification. This is supposed to work by riding your body of any toxins that may be enabling the cancer to spread and grow. It is thought that toxins help speed up the spread of cancer. Either one of these two methods are natural approaches that you may want to take. These are not the only approaches however that is available.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

January 8th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common form of skin cancer. It is affecting around 200,000 Americans each year. Though it is also labelled as a non-melanoma type skin cancer (alongside Basal Cell Carcinoma), it can turn nasty and become fatal as 1-2 percent of cases will metastasize.

Metastasis is a key criterion for malignancy. When the cancerous tumor manages to penetrate from the epidermis layer into the dermis layer of the skin, it could spread out very fast, to lymph nodes, blood vessels, and so to distant sites inside the body.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma share many common characteristics. For instance, it is usually found in the sun-exposed areas of the body. The commonest sites would include the head, the nose, temples, rim of the ear and lip, as well as the side and back of the neck, and the dorsal surfaces of the hand and forearm. SCC also occurs in sites of previous burns, scars, or chronic ulcers; or on the mucous membranes of the mouth.

It would normally appear as a red, scaling, well-defined plaque and may gradually develop into an ulcer, a scaly crust, or a wartlike surface. Eventually, it can spread into the deeper or surrounding tissues. They may become itchy or painful, and the lesion may start to bleed or ulcerate.

Recurrence is quite common amongst people who have had their SCC removed before. Typically, a recurrence might happen in the first two years of the previous removal and is likely to appear in the same skin area as to the previous presentation.

Sunlight, X-ray exposure, arsenic ingestion, and occupational carcinogens are all key contributing factors to this skin cancer. As such, getting to know about these causes and building the knowledge of defence would surely be the most meaningful strategy.
