Acne treatment: Nutrition

March 9th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

The way you eat is almost as important as what you eat! I bet that surprised you – I know it did me when I first heard it. I also realised that I had never really learn to eat properly.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO EAT PROPERLY?

Your body has a lot to do with the food that you take into your system. It is your fuel for the day, and your body has to sort it all out and to make sure that the right things end up in the right places – or you won’t be able to function properly. If you’re not eating the bets way for your body, things can end up in the wrong places and this leads to things like candida, headaches, bowel problems and ACNE!

HOW TO EAT PROPERLY

DON’T DRINK WHEN YOU’RE EATING – not even water, but especially not sodas and iced drinks. Your body needs its digestive juices – saliva – to break down the food and make sure that it gets to the right places. If you’re drinking at the same time as you’re eating, it dilutes the saliva and makes it harder for it to do its job.

CHEW YOUR FOOD CORRECTLY – you need to chew your food until it is a soft mush in your mouth – about 32 times for each mouth full. This is something that I remember being told a a child – “Chew your food!“. Life has become so fast these days, that often we eat on the go and swallow food without chewing it much at all. This is making it much harder for your body to digest the food properly, and may add to many health problems – especially skin problems.

COMBINE YOUR FOODS CORRECTLY – it makes it much easier for your body to digest things if it only has to deal with one type of food at a time – because different foods need different types of saliva to be digested properly. So, if you eat carbohydrates – bread, pasta, rice, potatoes – mix them with vegetables and salad rather than proteins – eggs, meat, fish, cheese. If you are eating proteins, eat them with salad and vegetables and miss out the carbohydrates – your body will like it much better, and will be able to work more efficiently and you should start to feel the difference.

BE CAREFUL WHEN AND WHERE YOU CHOOSE TO EAT. If you can, eat when you are feeling relaxed. Sit at a table if possible. Try not to watch TV as you’re eating. If you’re stressed when you’re eating, or not sitting in an upright position – like slumped in front of the TV! – your body will find it much harder to digest your food properly. We know what that leads too..

LEARN TO LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. Eat when you’re hungry. It sounds simple, but a lot of us do not listen to our bodies properly, and we mistake thirst for hunger – so if you feel hungry, try drinking water, and then see in 5 minutes if you’re still hungry. At other times, we eat when we’re feeling bored, or sad or angry. Get in the habit of checking in with yourself before you eat without thinking – and see if it might be something other than hunger you’re really feeling. Here’s a hint – if you’re craving one of your comfort foods, it’s often a sign that there’s an emotion hanging around that you’re not that comfortable with. If you learn to eat when you are hungry, your body will be able to do it’s job of digesting food much more efficiently.

Stress and Acne

February 26th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

There was a time, many years ago, that doctors thought that everything affected someone’s well-being had everything to do only with their emotional state. They would merely prescribe people to calm down, and that their ailments would naturally disappear, if they simply stayed positive, and stopped worrying about things.

Of course, with all medical advancements we’ve had in the past century, we know this to not be true. There are many medical conditions that have nothing to do with how you “feel” and everything to do with the disease attacking body, whether it’s Acne or something. Thus the focus is no longer on relaxation, but on direct treatment, whether it be pills, or something more direct that you put on the skin.

Stress and the 21st Century

Nowadays, with the latest scientific studies and research, we know this to simply not be the case. We now know that stress can lead to the onset of a lot of different things, to increased risk of heart attack, development of nervous habits, not to mention the worst of all, psychosomatic illness, which simply means nothing is wrong with you, but your brain creates the feeling of sickness all on it’s own.

This means a lot not just for your health, but for how you treat Acne as well. You need to have an emotional relationship with your Acne, and not just stress out about it. Studies have shown this can lead to clearer skin faster. That is not to say that stress is the only cause, but it definitely can, and does, influence when Acne breakouts occur.

Psychodermatology

Some doctors are going so far as to create a new medical discipline, often referred to as psychodermatology. This includes learning to handle the depression often associated with an Acne breakout, so you can cure it faster, without the increased stress, that could cause you to spiral into even more health complications and problems.

This means that not only will your dermatologist give you acne treatments, but will also provide adequate psychotherapy as well. By developing an emotional relationship with your Acne, it can allow you to combat it and treat it faster, than if you were to say, whine about it all day with tons of complaints, leading to more stress, leading to more fuel for that Acne to utilize. When people say, “Calm Down! You’ll feel a lot better!”, you won’t just feel better, but look better too.

December 8th, 2009 Dan Hicks No comments

Both men and women suffer from daily discomfort and distressing remembrance of acne usually sustained during teenage years. Medical treatment such as topical ointments, vitamins and oral medications are abound in the market today. Although some potent oral medications and topical ointments prove to alleviate small and recent wounds due to acne, the search for a more effective means to remove old scars is more challenging.

Some go for laser treatment such as diode laser or blue light therapy. Laser and light-based therapies reach the deeper layers of skin, helping improve the skin’s texture and lessening the appearance of scars. Laser therapies were concerned effective to some, the damage it brings to the skin’s sebaceous glands resulting for drier skin and ultimately results to premature wrinkles. Moreover, laser therapy can be very costly and is thus unattainable for many acne sufferers.

Microdermabrasion is now becoming a very popular and effective method of treating acne scars. It is alot less expensive than laser treatments and delivers successful non-invasive treatment for scars due to acne. Microdermabrasion, with the use of a wand which blows microscopic crystals or even diamonds to exfoliate the outer layer of the skin and evens the skin surface. After the gentle abrasion, all the dead skin cells and dirt which clogged the pores and one of the major causes of acne will be vacuumed with the use of a suction. To achieve more supple. smoother and renewed skin, vitamin enriched emulsions is used. Skin lightening and diminishing dark pigmentation is also achieved in microdermabrasion treatment.

Depending on the microdermabrasion machine used by the dermatologist or licensed aesthetician, the process and combination of treatment can vary. Most acne scars are treated 3-4 sessions for optimal results. Although there are home microdermabrasion machines in the market today, a commercial duty microdermabrasion machine used in clinics will deliver more powerful dermabrasion and suction. Some of clinical microdermabrasion machines are equipped with multi-function uses like ultrasound and skin scrubber.

Among the two technologies, Diamond Microdermabrasion machine has become the more prevalent and preferred treatment. The crystal type leaves a crystal residue that can become irritating, and can even get in the clients eyes, nose and mouth. Used as a main treatment for facials which results to a much younger, smoother and healthier look, microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion not only alleviates wrinkles and scars, it also removes dirt, dark pigmentation, dead skin cells and it also improves circulation of the blood and strengthens skin tissue metabolism.
Microdermabrasion has become a very popular treatment for treating acne scars and a variety of skin problems. Diamond microdermabrasion seems to be superior in many ways to other microdermabrasion systems.

Conquering Acne

November 27th, 2009 Dan Hicks No comments

Everyone is faced with the predicament of how to conquer acne. In order to overcome it, one must first learn how to accept it. This means one must not only seek prevention or cure for acne, but also learn to adjust socially despite this stigma.

Both boys and girls suffering from acne are faced with the possibility of being teased, or worse, socially isolated because of their skin condition. A good example of how acne can ruin not only one’s features, but also social influence is exhibited in the story of Chelsea Fahey.

As a child model, Chelsea garnered ten beauty pageant awards. Her fame culminated in her winning the Miss Teen America 2004 title. However, just after she entered 7th grade, she was bombarded with acne.

“I used to hide my face behind my hair. I didn’t want to see people’s reactions, so I always looked down. I didn’t want to see people wincing”,

recalls Chelsea, who is presently eighteen years old. This demonstrates the negative effect acne has on someone’s emotions and personality.

The Academy of Dermatology states that almost all teens ranging from twelve to seventeen years old are bound to have acne, and forty percent of them will most likely be plagued with the severe type. Not only will they be subject to mere pimples, but to intense physical as well as emotional scarring.

“Because I didn’t want to date anyone, neither did I have that many friends. I hated touching my face, and I hated looking at mirrors. It was really a sorrowful time for me”, says Chelsea.

She went to the extent of covering all mirrors in their house, because she could not bear to look at herself. She resorted to so many cures to acne, such as creams, facial washes, special makeup, pills, but none of these solved her acne problem. Chelsea did not even want to address the problem even to her own mother. She mistakenly thought that if she tried talking about it, she was succumbing to her acne problem. She didn’t want to add any more to her problems as a teenager.

Chelsea’s mother was correct, though: the more Chelsea denied her acne problem, the more she was succumbing to it. In order to start walking the long road to acne resolution, one has first to admit that acne truly is a pervasive problem.

More About Acne Treatment

Do celebrities get Acne?

With all the money at their disposal and the best doctors they can call we may think that celebrities skin does not show spots. The truth may be otherwise. Acne does not know the owner of the skin and it appears anywhere on anybody if conditions are conductive. Recently a study found that stress is one of the causes of acne. All celebrities live a life of stress. It is not easy to face the cameras and be in public glare all the time. The worry of failure may also be causing a lot of stress. This will cause acne in some celebrities.

How about the makeup? A celebrity may use the best make up that is non comedogenic. But it does block the skin pores. It may contribute to acne. Those who need a skin that is flawless and free of any kind of spots do get acne. So do all of us. The best is to treat acne in the right manner.

Keep your skin as much clean as possible. Do not over wash. Avoid stress. If you get acne, do not get stressed. That may flare up the acne. Acne medication takes time to treat acne. Be patient and use your medicine regularly. If you find that a food is causing breakout of acne avoid that food. Do not pop up acne. That may cause scarring.

Change your medication after two to three months. That will not allow acne to become resistant to a particular medicine. Use antibiotics if infection develops. Infection may cause scars. The common medicines made from Benzoyl peroxide and Salicylic Acid are good for most kind of mild acne. Use retinoids for less severe acne. Use retinoids to treat blackheads and keep your skin young.

Treatment using Isotretinoin

Isotretinoin is considered the most effective drug for acne. It is a type of Vitamin A and is taken orally. Isotretinoin can treat severe acne effectively. The problem is that Isotretinoin also has many side effects. The major concern is pregnancy. it has to be strictly avoided during or before pregnancy. It may cause birth defects in the new born. There are other side effects of Isotretinoin such as dry lips and mouth, swelling of the eyelids or lips, crusty skin, nosebleeds, indigestion, thinning of hair, etc.

Serious side effects include depression, aggressive behavior, sun sensitivity, muscle pain, fever and painful swallowing.

There are some other serious side effects of Isotretinoin. The point is that though Isotretinoin is highly effective in treating acne it needs to be avoided as far as possible. How to do that?

1. Begin treatment of acne as soon as the first spot appears.

2. If you have a family history of severe acne, it would be better to consult a doctor.

3. Try and keep your skin clean and free of oil. Excess washing does not help.

4.Try not to get stressed. Stress may increase acne.

5. Use common remedies such as Benzoyl Peroxide, salicylic Acid and AHAs to control acne in initial stages.

6. Use antibiotics at the first sign of infection. Amongst antibiotics, Tetracycline, Minocycline, Doxycyline and Erythromycin are commonly used.

7. Consult your doctor about light treatment.

8. Avoid any kind of facial if you have an acne outbreak.

9. Use noncomedogenic cosmetics and skin care products.

10. Use oil free hair care products.
