Causes, Symptoms and Treatment for Exercise-Induced Asthma

December 29th, 2011 No comments
Asthma is a disease whose main characteristic is the shortness of breath and we can see most of the patients generally panting and gasping for breath after a moderately rigorous physical exercise. Generally, there is handy equipment which makes them normal again and there are many restrictions for people with asthma. It is helpful for such people to search for online healthcare products which may help them with this medical condition.

One may not know that asthma has many types and one of them is exercise-induced asthma or E.I.A. which is almost similar to the general asthma and induced by sustained aerobic exercise. It also responds to some of the typical asthma medications but it seems it is not caused by the same inflammatory reaction as the other types.

exercise-induced asthma

This medical condition may be triggered due to several minutes of vigorous aerobic activity and it requires that the normal nasal breathing may be supplemented by mouth-breathing. The air that has not been humidified and warmed by the nasal passages appears to be increasing the blood flow to the linings of the bronchial tree, causing edema. It results in constriction of these vessels and worsens the level of obstruction of the airflow. This also causes same symptoms like the other forms of asthma but without the inflammatory changes.

The signs of an asthma attack will mainly be shortness of breath and coughing, wheezing or elevated respiratory rate which may be heard even without a stethoscope. In a severe attack, the consciousness level may get altered due to the change in oxygen level in the blood. Mostly, this occurs to somebody with both allergic and E.I.A. in a highly allergen environment and it can prove to be fatal.

The refractory period, in the hour after the attack, mild symptoms may be produced and sometimes, 6-10 hours after the initial attack, a rebound attack with milder symptoms may develop even without any exertion.

The best treatment for asthma is avoiding such situations which trigger an attack. The athletes who are victims of exercise-induced asthma should take preventive measures for asthma attacks, like altered training techniques and medications, in order to continue their involvement in sports. Some sportsmen take an advantage of the refractory period by timing their competition in that period and having the attack during the warm-up time.

The most common medication is to use a beta agonist and some doctors also prescribe inhaled anti-inflammatory such as corticosteroids and mast cell stabilizers have also proven effective. Nebulizers are also a great option for people with asthma. One should always be aware of treatment options of such medical conditions.

Revolutionary Depression Treatment

December 29th, 2011 No comments

This depression treatment strategy is unique in that it is a combination of science and nature, so there is no mystery or magic, just facts. Can there really be a treatment that helps address your depression every day, without having to do anything, not even take a pill? Yes there is, but it is not a skin patch, but a similar concept, and you do not need to replace it.

It is our version of a microchip implant, except that you attach it to the surface of your skin. First we need to explain the basics of how it works. Our thirty plus years of ongoing health research has largely involved using medicinal plant oils, called essential oils.

We have selected some essential plant oils from our expertise and practical applications. Ones like Benzoin and Alpinia Zerumbet, for inflammation, and deep calmness and central nervous system balance. Then other oils that balance and uplift, such as Rosewood and Spikenard.

Normally, these oils would be applied to the skin, and their therapeutic properties would quickly travel around the whole body. What is not widely known is that it is not just the actual contact with the oils, but their specific frequencies, that have their therapeutic effect. Our average body frequency reading could be about sixty hertz, but these oils have frequencies up to four thousand hertz. This means that they are harmful to toxic cells, but beneficial to healthy ones. Hence it inhibits any depression inflammation or any other disease potential. Essential oils protect the health of the plants they come from, and do the same for us.

The next step is storing these plant oil properties in a silicon dioxide, which is quartz, similar to a computer chip. We need these properties to be permanently stored and to continuously emit them into our body.

This is the point where some people have difficulty understanding or believing. The combination of science and nature is wonderful, and what matters is that it works.

Quartz crystal or silicon dioxide, is the most abundant mineral on the planet. Its history of healing dates back to the Pharaohs in Egypt, and Incas in South America. It is also in our bodies, in the pineal gland and in every cell.

The science gets deep and fascinating, but it is science, and fact. The properties of crystals themselves include storing of information in its unique internal structure, and its ability to keep this data constant, hence its use in timekeeping in crystal watches, computers, satellite communication, and equipment in industry.

The healing properties stored in the bracelet crystals can be detected and absorbed by the microscopic crystal content in our blood and right through our body, thus transferring the balancing and healing properties to help balance our emotions, and to inhibit any disease causing inflammation, with the anti inflammatory properties of Benzoin oil.

Bling, there you have it, your own therapeutic depression eliminating bracelet. All the beneficial health properties of the oils, are encoded into the crystal beads. While you are wearing the bracelet, the healing frequencies are absorbed into your skin.

So now you have several ongoing therapeutic benefits, of balancing calming, and uplifting. It is like taking continuous vitamins, or continuous remedies, or massage. It is a gentle, natural and effective first aid, that helps you along, and hopefully, prevents any chance of depression setting in.

Scarlet Fever in Kids: What You Should Know

December 29th, 2011 No comments

Among the health conditions that you must be aware of, if you have kids, is scarlet fever.

Scarlet fever in kids is a common phenomenon and often than not, it is mistaken for other illnesses because of its symptoms, which includes:

scarlet fever for kids- headache
- vomiting
- abdominal pains
- sore throat
- fever
- loss of appetite
- rash

Scarlet fever in kids occurs as a result of being infected by a certain strain of the group A streptococci bacteria, which also brings about strep throat. Upon exposure to it, the bacteria will be in incubation from one to seven days and then the first signs of the illness will appear. It usually begins with a fever of around 38.3 degrees Celsius or 101 degrees Fahrenheit and a sore throat. Other symptoms listed above may or may not manifest. The rash will only appear approximately two days after the onset of fever and would have a texture like that of a sandpaper and can be very itchy.

When you see the above symptoms occurring in your child, go to your pediatrician immediately for check up. In determining whether it is indeed scarlet fever, the child would have to undergo swab testing to check if the strep bacteria are present. When it is confirmed, antibiotics will be prescribed by the doctor, which should be administered for around 10 days. You must be very keen in following the instructions given by the pediatrician, especially in regards to the length of time the antibiotics must be taken so that you can be assured that the bacteria are totally eliminated.

Scarlet fever in kids can cause a lot of inconveniences. Thus, during the course of the disease, you can give your child lots of fluid and soft food like soup, shakes and ice cream, to soothe the throat. It is also advisable to make them drink a lot of water to help lower down their temperature.

This condition is contagious, which is why; if you or someone in your home has it, do not let kids come near you because they can be easily affected. If your kids are already attending school, advise them not to go near people with coughs, colds, fever or rash. If your child is the one with the fever, better make them stay at home rather than get other people contaminated with the same.

Although scarlet fever is not a fatal disease, taking it for granted can cause serious complications. So, if you see the symptoms, go to your doctor immediately.

Pharmaceutical Fraud And Kickbacks

December 29th, 2011 No comments
Pharmaceutical industry giants have long been suspected as not playing a fair hand with the American public. As Congress struggles to retain a new health care system that is facing an uphill battle in the courts system, the future of health care and in particular pharmaceuticals is uncertain. But with more whistleblowers coming out of the woodwork than ever before, it is safe to say that no matter what happens with the final decision on health care, pharmaceuticals will be placed under intense scrutiny. The reason that whistleblowers and legal authority is needed to police this industry is that it compromises patient care and turns what should be a service industry into a business.
If you are uncertain of the ways that doctors and pharmaceutical sales reps commit acts of fraud, then consider the following:

Kickbacks

Many doctors are given kickbacks by drug companies for recommending their product over another. This preferential treatment is illegal, but with uncertainty regarding the future of the health care industry and how doctors are paid for their time and resources, it could become much more prevalent. Unfortunately, the people most likely to suffer from kickbacks are those needing medical assistance. When a drug wins approval that does not really do the job that it purports to, it can leave the patient powerless to defend himself against medical malpractice.

Improper Diagnoses

Another way that medical companies and health care professionals can commit pharmaceutical fraud is to go with improper diagnoses and withhold treatments that can actually improve the life of an individual. Whenever a medical professional sees symptoms of a patient, they are likely to prescribe the most expensive medication on account of the fact that it leads to a higher bill. If there is a cheaper and more effective option available, they tend to ignore it because it means less in their pockets.

Often times, unscrupulous medical professionals will make their decisions based on a client’s ability to pay. If there is some thinking that the insurance company will cover a drug, then these individuals are drawn to the most expensive regardless of whether or not it actually works. But once again, it is unfortunate that the patient ultimately suffers, because most health insurance companies only cover part of a medication. While a patient may only find themselves paying 20 percent, that 20 percent can be too heavy on their finances if the treatment is extremely expensive.

There are many fine doctors and nurse practitioners in the medical community, who play by the rules and put their patients first. But there are also those, who are in it primarily for the money, and when you encounter them, it is good to know there are watchdogs and legal help to stand up for your rights.

Binge Eating Help

December 27th, 2011 No comments

stop binge eatingOf course, you can’t achieve anything worthwhile without hard work and determination, but it shouldn’t be negative and degrading. Diets teach you how to use will power to deprive or starve yourself, go without your favourite foods, beat yourself up or feel guilty for wanting to enjoy something delicious. That’s exactly why they don’t work long-term. We do not respond well to negative things, especially other people telling us what to do. Eventually we will have had enough of depriving ourselves, and end up bingeing on the exact food we were trying to avoid anyway.

A more positive alternative is “Natural Eating”, which simply enables us to eat with “awareness” rather than out of habit. We learn to tune into our body, so we can respond to its signals rather than eating on a schedule. We do not have to give anything up, or rely on willpower; we simply listen to our body instead. When it tells us we are hungry, we eat. When we’re not hungry we don’t! We eat exactly what we feel like at the time and when we’ve had enough we stop. When we’re not hungry we’re not thinking about food. And that’s it. It’s not complicated or painful or degrading, just common sense.

Of course, at first it takes great mindfulness. A lot of us don’t even know when we are hungry because we are used to eating at certain times of day, not necessarily when our body wants the food. Often it’s hard to know exactly what we want to eat because we have had years of not allowing ourselves to eat our favourite foods. We are used to eating what we “should” and not what we necessarily “want”. And finally knowing when to stop is the hardest of all. This is generally because we are used to eating a certain amount of food, whether we have had enough or not.

Through eating naturally our senses become heightened so we know exactly when we are hungry and when we are satisfied. We respond to our body’s signals not because we have to, but because it makes us feel good to look after it properly. We have more energy as we eat what we need regularly and we start to feel healthier as we begin to take care of ourselves. Everything about natural eating is positive and empowering and that is why it works. You simply change your mindset around food and start to treat yourself kindly instead.

So if you are constantly dieting, depriving yourself, exercising excessively or trying to survive on will power, stop! Learn how to eat naturally instead so you can be in control of food, instead of food being in control of you.

The Herniated Lumbar Disc

December 27th, 2011 No comments

What is a herniated or slipped disc? Understanding what it is requires knowledge of the anatomy of a lumbar disc and what changes occur when it herniates. First, the inside of the disc is composed of a jelly-like substance called mucoploysaccharide. Inside the jelly substance is a hard nucleus (nucleus polpusus) that acts like a ball-bearing. On the outside of the disc is a crisscrossed pattern of stretchy bands called annular fibers. The crisscrossing annular bands give the disc strength and flexibility and the nucleus rotates within the confines of the jelly substance in concert with spinal movement. The result is a divinely inspired design and the perfect pivot between two vertebras. The two vertebras with the disc in the middle are the basic components of a spinal joint.

So, the disc works like this: Imagine holding a barbell with heavy weights attached over your head. What happens? The entire disc compresses, loses height and widens like an automobile tire gone flat. Now, put the barbell down. As you bend, extend, twist or flex, so do the stretchy annular fibers on the outside of the disc. At the same time, the nucleus shifts within the jelly substance to the opposite side you are leaning. So, if you laterally bend to the right, the nucleus shifts to the left.

With an understanding of disc anatomy, we’ll talk about the bones surrounding the disc. With the two vertebras, there is the image of a disc sandwich: The vertebras are like the bread and the disc is like the meat in the middle. Now it’s time to add some important bones to the back (posterior portion) of the spinal joint. For our purposes, the most significant of these bones are the pedicle rings because they form an opening for the spinal cord. Through this opening, the spinal cord travels through the spinal joint. Of course, with a joint of any kind there’s movement. So, we can add bony (synovial, lubricating) articulations from one vertebra to another enabling movement in many directions. Most importantly, these articulations form holes (neural foramina) where nerve roots, coming off the spinal cord, exit the joint and control whatever tissues they innervate.

I specifically chose a lumbar disc for this article because it has a greater responsibility for weight bearing than any other area of the human spine because we walk upright, called bipedalism. Also, lumbar discs are also required to be very flexible.

herniated lumbar discSo, what can go wrong? How does a lumbar disc herniate? Imagine this: a herniated disc is like a tire with a bubble protruding from its side. The bubble forms because rubber fibers have worn thin and pressure from air within the inner tube finds the weakest point. This analogy is very similar to a herniated disc. The jelly substance inside of the lumbar disc also has pressure. If for whatever reason some of the external annular fibers tare, a protrusion occurs, like the bubble on the side of the tire. A little bubble is like a disc protrusion and a big bubble is like a disc extrusion: two kinds of slipped or herniated discs. A disc protrusion is a very common condition and can normally be treated conservatively, such as with chiropractic adjustments. A disc extrusion is much less common and may require surgery. The most serious kind of herniated disc is called sequestration, the segmented disc. Simply stated, a portion of the disc becomes completely separated from the main body of the disc. This condition almost always requires surgery. In all these disc conditions, the herniated disc material can pin the sensitive nerve root against the bony wall of the vertebra. This, in turn, inflames the nerve root.

The signs and symptoms of a herniated disc vary with the different kinds. However, there are several common symptoms, such as antalgic posture. It’s when a person stands and walks slanted to one side like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. They lean to the side opposite the herniated disc taking pressure off the nerve root. A good sneeze often results in a sharp, breathtaking pain. After sitting awhile and then attempting to stand, the disc victim can be seen pushing up their legs in order to achieve a standing position. While trying to stand still, people with a herniated lumbar disc perform the famous low back dance swaying from side to side, weighting and unweighting from one foot to the other. And there may be other unpleasant signs, like nausea. Of course, pain radiating into one leg, and muscle spasm are very common.

These are typical symptoms of a disc protrusion, the least serious type. With a disc protrusion, symptoms come on like a cyclone, full of sound and fury. And, surprisingly, weeks later all symptoms can be entirely gone. This is not the case with a disc extrusion or disc sequestration. Symptoms persist and often worsen. Lack of bowel control and/or bladder incontinence accompanied with intractable pain at night are often experienced. But, as I mentioned, these last two are much less common.

Lumbar disc symptoms transcend typical low back pain in intensity. They’re nasty and they demand attention. In closing, here are several tips for treatment and relief. First apply ice, never heat to the low back. Ice relieves pain and is anti-inflammatory. Second, a low back support can relieve and immobilize the area. [Hint: it's not for everybody with a disc condition.] Chiropractic adjustments are designed to restore proper spinal joint function and are known to offer a quick recovery. And in some cases, physical therapy can be effective.

Five Ways to Alleviate Migraine Pain

December 27th, 2011 No comments

Migraine pain can be rather disabling and greatly disruptive to your career, family and social life. Besides feeling the throbbing pain in one area of your head, very often migraine pain is accompanied by nausea and vomiting. If you suffer from chronic migraine, migraine pain management is something you would need to learn.

migraine and exercisesHere are five ways to alleviate migraine pain:

1) Get Adequate Rest And Relaxation

Stress, inadequate sleep or disrupted sleep patterns are potential migraine triggers. Find time to do something you enjoy and are passionate about. Be sure to get sufficient sleep each day. Sleep in a darkened room that is well ventilated and without any scented candles if you are sensitive to odours. Try to sleep at a fixed time each night and give yourself time to unwind before you sleep. Turn off the television and computer, not forgetting your cellphone as well.

2) Exercise

Exercise allows the pent-up energy that stress produces to dissipate. At the same time, your body releases endorphins that not only makes you feel good about yourself, it also acts as a natural analgesic resulting in instant migraine pain relief. Walking, running, swimming, aerobics and water aerobics are excellent choices.

3) Watch Your Diet

Be sure to eliminate potential migraine food triggers from our diet. Alternatively you can substitute these dietary triggers with safer choices. Read your labels carefully and avoid monosodium glutamate and food additives as much as possible. Limit alcohol and caffeine. Drink water instead of carbonated and energy drinks. Replace hot dogs and cured meats with fresh chicken and fish instead. This is because migraine attacks have been linked to sodium nitrite which is found in processed meat.

4) Get A Massage

Visit a certified massage therapist who will then apply manual pressure to the pain joints on your head and neck to alleviate migraine pain behind the eye and in the neck. If you are unable to find time to go for a massage, you can also apply cold compresses to reduce the pain.

5) Go For Botox Injections For Migraines

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of botox for treating migraine headaches. Botox injections can be given every twelve weeks to the head and neck. This treatment has been found to reduce the occurrence of migraine for four to six months. This method of reducing pain may have potential side effects. Be sure to discuss them with your doctor to ensure you make an informed decision.

Food and Diabetes Relationship

December 27th, 2011 No comments

Don’t you believe that the food you eat every day has great relevance to your health? If not, you are making a grave mistake. Your daily diet- the types of food, quantity of food, quality of food, frequency of taking food is closely correlated to the health conditions as well as diseases. By changing the lifestyle and the eating habits you can help your body to control any disease or even keep it aside from happening.

diabetes and diet

Diabetes is a world known chronic disease causing increased blood sugar level in the body. If not attended to from the beginning diabetes may pose and worsen many other health problems. So it is your interest to amend your life style including eating habits for overcoming diabetes.

While taking care of diabetes you have to take care of three aspects of eating i.e. what to eat, when to eat as well as how much to eat. Following precautions may help you to fight diabetes, or maintain the present level or even reduce it to certain extent only by taking right kind of food.

Sugar is considered as the number one enemy of Diabetes. But it is a wrong notion that diabetic person has to give up eating sugar totally. You need not and must not eliminate sugar from your daily diet plan. You only need to cut down the consumption of sweets. You can enjoy the sweets on rare or special occasions. Try to reduce the sugar in your tea or coffee- this you can do every day. Further give up the habit of frequently drinking soda or sweetened drinks- those are most harmful for you. You should rather opt for healthy substitutes to control your intake of sweets and sugar. Give preference to water for soda, select fruit dish instead of ice cream.

Another important aspect of food you need to control very much is the consumption of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are essential for supply of fuel to your body. You need to be selective about quantity of carbohydrates and its forms. Try to be smart in selection of carbohydrates you eat. White rice be substituted by brown rice, also choose whole grain bread in place of white bread. You can do it easily without much trouble. Add the number of vegetables to your diet every day. Eating carbs with protein can help to reduce the impact of blood sugar level.

diabetics diet

Another most important thing for a diabetic person is to regularize the eating habits. Establishing and maintaining particular timing for breakfast, lunch or dinner is far more important in this regard. With systemized eating habits your body is in better position to control your blood sugar levels and your weight too. Never commit a mistake of skipping breakfast. It is the most important requirement of your body for healthy life. It is also advisable to have more number of small meals at regular intervals so that you can easily overcome hunger.

The other equally or rather more important aspect of food consumption is to you need to listen to your body. Our body has very sound system and mechanism to give various kinds of signals and therefore try to hear and listen to it, and act upon it wisely. Never be crazy about food but follow conscious signals coming from your body system.

Diet and Fitness – Every Little Bit Adds Up

December 26th, 2011 No comments

What is stopping you from beginning a new diet and fitness plan? Often time’s people say they just don’t have the time. They don’t have an hour to spare a few times a week that most workout plans require. This may be true for many of us, but it is not an excuse to ignore our health. Working out and eating right isn’t just about being buff, although that is quite a nice benefit. Exercise and good nutrition are not luxuries or chores or something you will do when you have more time. A healthy lifestyle is key for your long-term physical and mental health.

diet and fitness

So let’s say we agree that you have to live a healthier lifestyle but you are still too busy to workout within a normal exercise routine. Like the title says, every little bit adds up. What if you took 10 minutes a few times a day and did a few body weight exercises? That adds up to a ½ hour workout in a day. Do that Monday to Friday and that adds up to 2 ½ hours of exercise each week. Maybe not the most optimal, but it will make a big difference in how you look and feel in the long haul.

Everyone and I mean absolutely everyone can take 10 minutes a few times a day. If not 10 minute breaks do 5 minutes. Do 1 set of a few exercises every so often throughout the day. The difference will be dramatic.

For example, say you did 1 set of push ups, 1 set of squats, and 1 set of crunches. Let’s say you did 10 repetitions for push ups and squats, and 20 repetitions for crunches. How long would that take you? Definitely less than 5 minutes. Let’s say you did these 5 times a day. That would be 50 push ups and 50 squats and 100 crunches a day. That would be 250 push ups and squats a week and 500 crunches to boot. This volume of work over the course of months and years ahead will keep you very, very strong. You see it doesn’t take much effort to make a change.

Combine this kind of work with a few other changes in your life and it all really starts to add up and make changes. Walk more; it’s as simple as that. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. For shorter distances walk instead of drive. Play with your kids. Walk your dog. Be more active in your everyday life. This will help your heart, help you burn calories, help you clear your head, and keep you fit.

If you really want to lose weight fast you have to eat better. This isn’t about reducing calories so much as about eating the kind of food your body needs. It can be delicious and filling, it just requires you to change your habits. Fast food and processed foods need to be minimized to no more than 3 cheat meals a week. The soda pop and fruit juices need to be replaced with water, water, water. Whole foods, plenty of fibre, quality protein are must-haves. Does a thick steak with brown rice and a side of asparagus sound like you’re sacrificing for a diet? Just an example of a typical meal made of whole foods. Be creative and you won’t feel like you’re giving up when you avoid the junk foods. Diet and fitness doesn’t have to be hard.

Can You Whiten Your Teeth Too Much?

December 26th, 2011 No comments

Teeth whitening is big business these days. It is not just rich celebrities that are wandering around with dazzling white smiles. It is becoming more and more common for ordinary members of the public to get their teeth whitened as well. However in this article I want to talk about the dangers of teeth whitening, and discuss whether or not you can whiten your teeth too much.

The trouble with watching a lot of TV programs and movies, and reading a lot of celebrity magazines is that seeing lots of these famous people with their perfect smiles makes you self-conscious about your own teeth. As a result of this, some people whiten their teeth repeatedly over and over again in order to get the same kind of teeth that are equally as white.

whiten teeth too much

However it’s important to remember that a lot of these celebrities will have had a lot more work done than a simple teeth whitening procedure. In a lot of cases they may have paid thousands of dollars for veneers to be fitted.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that many people think that teeth that are too white look fake and slightly unattractive. Indeed there are many celebrities that I can think of that now look slightly odd because their teeth are ridiculously white. So you shouldn’t necessarily be aiming to make them as white as possible. The goal should be to make them a natural shade of white, without looking as if they have been professionally whitened.

If you whiten your teeth too much, there is also the real danger that you will damage your teeth and leave them looking a lot worse. This is because if you use a particular treatment for too long, or if you do not leave long enough between treatments (a 6-12 month break is generally recommended), then your teeth can turn grey and start to appear translucent.

This is obviously not a good look, and will possibly put you off teeth whitening for life. So you should always follow the instructions provided with each treatment, or take advice from your dentist.

If you look after your teeth after you have had them whitened, then you shouldn’t need to redo them for another one or two years anyway. You just need to limit your intake of tea, coffee and red wine, and try and give up smoking if possible.

So to go back to the original point, the truth is that yes you can indeed whiten your teeth too much. Not only can they appear too white in some cases and look unattractive and slightly odd, but you can also damage them if you are not careful. This will leave them translucent and even more unattractive. So try and leave as much time as possible between treatments, and certainly a minimum of six months if you want healthy teeth that are a natural shade of white.
