Back Massage Ease Pain Faster

November 30th, 2010 No comments

Anyone who feels they have a hectic life, has a car, kids, pets or maybe is still in school or in today’s world looking for work uses their back every minute of every day. When we go and purchase those heavy groceries, push the cart. I put my kids in the car, switch around their seats, move their backpacks and there it is again, my backache. Not only does my upper back hurt, but my shoulder blades, lower back, shoulders. I frequently treat myself to a back massage at my local spa. There are so many benefits. Indian online pharmacy – cheap medications from India.

alleviate low back pain

You can go to your local spa and find out more. There will be a whole range of massages offered, and I encourage you to try all of them, but start with the back. Besides the feet, it is probably the most neglected part of your body, but needs special care, as it is used in everything from walking to sitting, to caring for children to even eating.

A masseuse will help navigate you through the world of massage. There is a variety of options for you to choose from head to hand, from finger to toes! You may wear nothing but towels, but if unsure, you should keep your underwear on. My first massage was so great. My back felt so good, and it wasn’t just a short relief. It is still great, even after a few weeks.

You and your spouse may both be feeling the same level of backache. This may lead to you feeling unsympathetic to him, and him discounting your gripes. Try talking with a girlfriend. She will understand. Who knows, she’s probably had many a massage. My good friend describes a massage as getting away from it all, a vacation.

Massage is an ancient technique, so it is tried and trusted. Modern medicine discounted it somewhat, but it enjoyed a revival in the 1960′s, and in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta it was deemed a core medical service.

back massage

Even though there are so many forms of massage and it can be performed on any body part, to me, the back massage is the greatest necessity. As a parent, I am constantly carrying heavy items while taxi-ing 3 girls hither and yon.

In order to keep the back healthy, one must stretch. Sure, we drive our children to dance, sports, track and sports, but do we really get what we need? I know personally, I sit through 3 hours of ballet, 4 of music and 2 of tap dance. Does this keep my back healthy? I don’t think so.

My little 6 year old will not let me win. I cannot leave her to watch her sisters in their classes, she will not walk with me, she will not ride her bike, sit in a stroller, or even take a piggy-back from me. I must sit. Sit and wait. While they exercise, I sit. And again through her class. And so I go for a back massage time after time, after time.

Preventing Heart Attacks Using Hypnosis

November 30th, 2010 No comments

As the hypnotist slowly waved the toothbrush in front of his subject’s eyes, he said in a monotone: “Your eyes are getting heavy, droopy and drowsy. And when you awaken, you will realize you want to brush your teeth. In fact, you will have an incredible desire to brush your teeth 2-3 times a day because your teeth will be happy and your heart will be healthier.”

Yes, it’s true: clean teeth have been strongly linked to a healthy heart. A large study in Scotland involving almost 12,000 people has revealed that persons who rarely or never brushed their teeth were 70% more likely to have a heart attack or other cardiovascular event.

preventing heart attacks

Even brushing once a day rather than twice a day was associated with a significant 30% increase in the risk of these fatal or nonfatal events.

Prior to this comprehensive study led by Richard Watt, Ph.D., of University College London, it was already well-known that periodontal disease, (a chronic inflammatory condition largely caused by poor oral hygiene), has been linked to heart disease.

However, what wasn’t known was just how pervasive and strong a link existed between periodontal disease and heart disease. The reason this is important is because now it is clearly obvious that something as simple as brushing twice a day can have far more benefits than a person realizes.

And yes, it is reasonable to assume that whether one was poor, a smoker, overweight and more would be important. Those factors (and many others) were accounted for in the study.

Now, can a hypnotist really bend someone to their will and make them brush their teeth?

If you are a parent, you know the answer to this question: No way. Try making your kids brush their teeth. My 1 ½ year old son Thomas can really make some frightening sounds and faces when I bring a toothbrush near his mouth.

Sadly our toddler does not yet understand the concept of bribery but his mother and I are working on that. We figure we’ll give him a candy bar for each time he brushes his teeth J.

heart attack prevention

In all seriousness, even though hypnosis never has and never will be able to make people do things against their will, it can powerfully help a person to do those things they want to.

In the book 21st Century Medicine: Clinical Evidence For The Healing Power of the Mind, there is an amazing amount of clinical testimony as to the true healing power of hypnosis and related modalities.

So, when you compare helping someone to be more motivated to brush their teeth to say, helping someone literally get rid of cancer (which is documented), then it seems very simple – and it is.

And yes, hypnosis can work on children too. They just need to be old enough and it needs to be done by someone other than their parents.

By the way, hypnosis has been shown to help with other things that can cause heart attacks such as smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Are you or someone you know, afraid of the dentist? You guessed it, hypnosis can help with that as well.

The point to this brief article is profound: Clinical evidence clearly indicates that your health or the health of a loved one can be so easily influenced for the better. Imagine, just brushing your teeth regularly can literally help prevent heart disease.

Have an excellent day and smile because it makes people wonder what you’re up to.

Acne and the Paleolithic Diet

November 30th, 2010 No comments

New scientific research is suggesting that the paleolithic or caveman diet may be an effective guard in the fight against acne. This is based on the theory that the modern diet introduces allergy and inflammation into the system and this is a contributor of the increase of acne producing enzymes. The paleo diet is one of the many options that are recommended to treat this embarrassing condition.

acne treatment

Information About Acne and its relationship to health and diet. Can a different diet help with the treatment of acne?

For many people becoming acne free is a dream. A lot of people have problems with whiteheads, blackheads, and have infected skin follicles. Years ago it was believed that acne had been caused form poor hygiene, or eating poorly. However this has become clear that it is not the case.

One of the causes of aces is not having enough fluid in your body. You can help reduce your acne by making sure that you drink at least eight glasses of water per day. This helps your digestive system and also your circulatory system and helps your body be in great condition. If your body has the right amount of hydration you will have the ability to ward off infection such as the bacteria found in acne.

One of the biggest factors that causes acne is oil based cosmetics. Acne that is caused from cosmetics is usually found in people that do not have acne problems except when they use cosmetics. This is a type of acne that will not have any scaring effect but it is unattractive just the same. If you happen to get this type of acne then stop using the cosmetic that is the problem.

 paleolithic diet

To get free of acne and to be acne free you need to clean often. There are many products that are readily available but you need to be sure that you pick one that is not abrasive. Any product that has salicylic acid can be an aide that is powerful against treating blackheads and any acne that is not inflamed.

The best preventive measure is to keep your hands off of any acne. By popping or squeezing you make breaks in your skin, this lets any bacteria in infesting your skin. Any person that suffers from acne needs to quit this horrible habit.

Another factor that contributes to acne’s is diet. Many scientists are touting the paleolithic or caveman diet as one that helps many functions of the body including the incidence of acne. This is interesting science and is something that is quite exciting to hear about. The principle being that the foods that we have introduced into our system since prehistoric times are not compatible with our evolutionary system and this creates allergic or inflammatory reactions which some believe include acne. So consider the Caveman diet as an option to fight acne.

Eating Better With The Heart Disease Diet

November 29th, 2010 No comments

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. It is responsible for the distribution of blood to the different parts of the body and it is where oxygenation takes place. And although the heart has actually nothing to do with your emotions, it is still the symbol of what you currently feel, especially love. Whenever love is mentioned, it is always correlated to the heart even if the seat of emotions is the brain, in the limbic system.

eating better

To take care of your heart, you need to eat a healthy diet and have regular exercise. These two activities, when you do them religiously, will give you a healthy heart, and a longer life without the trouble of going through heart attacks and other heart disorders. When you do have one of these however, then it is time for you to start on a heart disease diet. Although changing your eating habits is difficult, having a goal would make it easier.

A diet like this would basically start with cholesterol and fat limits. These two are the main causative factors of heart diseases, since when accumulated, they will block the arteries of the heart. There are good and bad cholesterol, and what you should eliminate are the trans fats. These are mostly found in butter, margarine, and cooking oil specifically shortening. Instead of using these ones, go for olive oil, low fat yogurt and vegetable oils. Instead of eating sauted or fried foods, choose to eat steamed and boiled ones. Eat also lean meats, and trim off the fats when there are any. These simple steps will eliminate a lot of fats and cholesterol in your diet.

The next step that you will need to do is to choose protein sources that have low fat component. When you drink milk, choose the ones that have lower fat such as skim milk. Instead of eating meat all the time, have fish. Some types of fish are heart healthy such as salmon, mackerel and herring. These contain omega-3 fatty acids which lower the triglycerides of the blood fats. Also, legumes are good sources of protein that do not have high fat content.

heart disease diet

Fruits and vegetables are indeed important. These are the best sources of vitamins and minerals instead of taking those dietary supplements. These have low calorie contents and are rich in dietary fiber. These also have nutrients that help in preventing heart diseases. Instead of having a junk food for your snacks, have a fruit to help keep your heart healthy. Sodium is one of the culprits in a heart disorder. It makes the blood pressure go up, and is a big risk factor in cardiovascular disorders. Eating fruits and vegetables will help you control your sodium intake.

Having a heart disease diet is not easy if you are used to eating sweets, meat and foods that have a lot of sodium and fat content. While you are starting, you may already be thinking about quitting on this heart disease diet. But keep in mind that when you eat like this, you are not just saving your heart, but your life as well.

The Process of Blood Clotting Is Complex and Can Lead to Death

November 29th, 2010 No comments

If you’ve ever wondered about the process of blood clotting then you may have an idea of its complexity. I mean, you need your blood to flow freely through your veins. It takes valuable nutrients and oxygen throughout your body and brain.

But, there are times when you need it to clot. Think of a razor nick. You bleed for a moment and you may apply pressure and it stops, right?

But the actual process involves tiny cell fragments (platelets) acting as a “rescue squad” of sorts. When you cut yourself, these platelets rush in and turn sticky. Meanwhile, your body has a system called the thrombin system and it starts a chemical process which creates a stringy peptide called fibrin. This fibrin works with the platelets to form a mesh-like covering over your cut and stop the bleeding.

That’s great in terms of stopping a cut. But what about when it’s internal? Say, your doctor has discovered a blood clot in your arteries. That’s dangerous. It’s a signal something’s not right with your internal health system.

Basically, what happens is this. The clotting process starts because your body thinks it should. For example, you have plaque in your arteries and an ulcer develops within that plaque. Since the ulcer isn’t supposed to be there, your body doesn’t know what to do with it and thinks it’s a problem. Your blood platelets activate and they begin to cover the ulcer’s surface. This kicks in the fibrin making mechanism and before long, you have a blood clot where there shouldn’t be one.

I’m sure you’re aware of the dangers of internal blood clotting. Doctors worry about them blocking blood flow to your heart or your brain. Because, as you know, a blockage could cause a heart attack or stroke.

If you have a “hardening” of the arteries (otherwise known as atherosclerosis) you may be at particular risk of experiencing the process of blood clotting within your veins. Likewise, if you have a weak heart, your blood may flow at a slower rate which can lead to dangerous clotting.

So, what can you do about this unhealthy process of blood clotting? Keep active and eating right are two ways. Studies show if you’re overweight it contributes to your health risks including internal blood clots.

Likewise, eating certain foods can help reduce your risk. Omega 3 fatty acids are especially helpful as they’re proven to thin your blood and provide essential fatty acids for your heart and brain. You can get more of these by eating fish 2-3 times a week or taking fish oil supplements.

Emotional Advice To Survive Redundancy

November 29th, 2010 No comments

The British papers are saying one thing: that it’s going to be an austere decade for the UK. It is expected that more jobs will be cut this year. And despite the plethora of insurance plans enough to cover personal loans, medical emergencies, and income protection, one can never be fully spared from the emotional trauma of being laid off.

In a work-obsessed society where people define themselves according to their paychecks, losing a job has even resulted to suicide, such as the case of the laid-off Kilpatrick lawyer. Though extreme cases like this are far in between, the general feeling is still far from positive.

While employment solicitors can dispense legal and financial advice to workers made redundant, the emotional impact on these people is often overlooked.

According to the British Association for Counseling and Psychotherapy, redundancy is “a social invitation to depression”.

Here are some mantras to help you survive the emotional wreckage of redundancy.

1. “You are not alone!” This time, you don’t have to some self-pitying because everybody else is having a bad time. They say misery loves company. Well, this misery certainly has a crowd – and in fact a whole country.

2. “The recession was not your fault!” You have nothing to do with the volatility of the economic cycle. We live in turbulent times and every nation across the globe is also dealing with some sort of financial crisis.

3. “Take the road less traveled” Obviously, applying for the same kind of job may be bleak assuming that sector is already having some serious cuts. This time could be a good opportunity to pursue your other passions – the ones you’ve always put at the back seat because you’re busy with that corporate job. A lot of successful enterprises have been founded on hobbies and other personal interests. Perhaps you have unique skills and talents that you have not been able to use in the corporate world.

4. “It’s better to lose your job now than lose it later!” It’s better because you have a smaller risk than if it happened when your family has gotten bigger and your expenses and obligations have doubled up.

5. “When you hit rock bottom, there’s no way to go but up!” There’s no better way to hold yourself together in this crisis but by being positive. Count your blessings. Look at the glass half-full. Seek the comfort of family and friends. And once you’ve been lifted up from your lamentation, and your mind is ready to think objectively, move forward and finally get some solid employment law advice.

Beliefs That Inhibit Physical Healing

November 29th, 2010 No comments

As the body-mind-spirit connection is researched in more depth, the power of beliefs continues to come to the forefront. The well-known Freud said that the personality was set by the time the child was 5-years old. Could the reason be that almost all foundational beliefs are programmed into the subconscious mind by this time? This includes beliefs affecting the body and health. Below are 5 common beliefs that do not support a healthy body.

I’m not wanted. When you don’t feel wanted you don’t feel good about yourself. This can lead to, at minimum, a low level depression. Chances are good that depression would be in the severe category. These feelings depress the immune system resulting in either illness or difficulty in recovering from accident or illness.

I’m loved when I’m sick. This belief may appear the opposite of “I’m not wanted.” Unfortunately, it is closely related. People who believe this received attention only when they were sick. When they were in bed or couldn’t go to school, they received special favors such at meals in bed, extra television time and more communication from mom or dad. The desire to repeat this pattern of affection and attention often out-weighs the desire for health.

I’m not good enough. This belief can permeate every area of life, not just health. When you don’t feel good enough you are programmed subconsciously to sabotage your efforts at success. This includes forming healthy habits in nutrition, sleep and exercise.

The body can’t heal. This subconscious belief can be set when you live with a parent who is chronically ill. You may have watched them struggle with their health, perhaps even died. If you don’t believe your body can heal, then the chances are your immune system responds in a way that is not supportive of health.

Nothing good happens to me. This is closely related to “I’m not good enough.” You may look around you and see or hear stories of people being healed in what seems to be a miraculous manner, but you stay sick. Other people may win the lottery, or be in the right place at the right time, but not you. The emotions associated with “Nothing good happens to me” are depressive and weaken the immune system.

For the body to heal, you need to have within you strong beliefs to support your body’s ability to return to balance when needed. What you learned as a young child can carry over to what your body does today. It’s time to change the non-supportive beliefs.

Exercise and Eating

November 28th, 2010 No comments

Want to lose fat? Exercise

Alright, we just covered the IN. To achieve weight loss, you also need to increase the OUT. Exercise will increase your OUT in three ways. First, you spend energy during the activity. Second, your body spends energy after the activity during about 48 hours in order repair muscle and refill energy stores. Third, in the long run and as you slowly build muscle, it increases your base energy usage (also called resting metabolic rate).

Also, noticed how the title is “lose fat” and not “lose weight”? This is because part of the weight lost in negative energy balance is muscle. As we’ve just seen, muscle helps increase your OUT by raising your base energy expenditure, so you want to keep your muscle mass intact as much as possible. Exercise, especially weight lifting, will do just that. In short, by exercising in combination with a negative energy balance, you’re making sure that you’re actually losing fat, and not muscle.

ACTION STEP REVISITED

There is no usual action step for this one. Once you’re started and comfortable with the cardio and abdominal training programs, if you want to speed progress up, add some weight lifting into your routine. A basic weight lifting program needs to include the Bench Press, the Squat, the Deadlift and Pull-ups*. For a comprehensive guide on weight training, I recommend Body Building Revealed. It is, to my knowledge, the web’s best source of information on the topic.

Tame your hunger

Eating has become too methodical. Frequently, we eat even if we’re not hungry. We eat for socializing, like at a restaurant or party. We eat for pleasure, like a craving for chocolate or ice cream. We eat out of anger, or because we feel empty.

Are you eating right now? Are you hungry right now?

If you answered yes to the first question, I hope you also answered yes to the second. Maybe you didn’t: we often eat without being hungry. This inevitably leads to overeating, which, repeated over time, becomes a habit. And the more you overeat, the more likely you’ll become overweight. The body knows exactly how much energy it needs. So, listening to your body and to your hunger is the first step toward better eating habits. It’s the focus of this tip and the next few.

ACTION STEP

“Am I hungry?” Ask yourself this question next time you’re about to eat. If you’re not, delay that meal or take a small portion. After all, you’re not hungry: this food is going to be turned into fat.

ACTION STEP REVISITED

Develop the habit of determining if you’re hungry before you eat. You may be surprised at how often you may realize you are not really hungry. When not hungry, skip the meal or take a smaller serving.
