Dermatological Acne Scar Removal Procedures

March 20th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

Deep, pitted acne scars, particularly those on the face, can make even the most confident among us suffer a self-esteem crisis from time to time. Scarring of any kind can greatly impact an individual, and while acne scars can look “rugged” on some men – think Harrison Ford, Robert Redford and Clint Eastwood – most women usually hate them.

While it may sound cliched, learning to live with yourself is perhaps the easiest, as well as safest and cheapest, way to deal with physical imperfections of any kind.

Acne usually begins with the onset of puberty, when we produce more sebum, the oily secretion made by our sebaceous glands, than our bodies can cope with gracefully. Prescription acne medications can often nip those pimples in the bud, but for some of us there is no escaping them – as well as the subsequent scarring.

Luckily, there are myriad treatments available on the market today that can either completely remove scars, or reduce their appearance significantly. Many dermatological procedures to reduce the appearance of acne scars can be carried out either by your dermatologist or at a med spa. Just make sure the person scraping, lasering or digging holes in your face is someone you trust!

Dermatological Acne Scar Removal Procedures

  • Laser Therapy. Works by making keloid scars, where this an overgrowth of tissue, and hypertrophic scars, which look similar to keloids but are smaller, less visible. Also works well on atrophic scarring, or tiny pockets in the skin which can be a direct result of acne. The magic of the lasers is that they remove a scar’s outer skin layer, revealing a bottom layer that eventually heals and by doing so minimizes the visibility of the scar itself. The type of laser used will depend on the type of scarring you have. You may suffer redness for several months, but the upside is that in some cases, one treatment is all you need for permanent results.
  • Steroid Injections. Sometimes these are used in conjunction with lasers, jabbed directly into keloid scars, to make them flat and less visible. It is difficult, however, to raise depressions, or pockets, except by regenerating the skin. Steroid injections are usually the only way to treat keloid scarring that occurs from acne scars, as surgical removal of them is seldom instrumented.
  • Dermabrasion. Thought to be the best method for acne scar removal, and is a more severe form of Microderm (see below). Instead of abrasive particles being used, your practitioner will use a brush (or fraise) to remove the skin. Superficial scars may disappear completely, deeper ones will be make less noticeable. Does not work for all types of scars, and people with darker skin might require additional treatment to sort out resultant pigmentation problems.
  • Microdermabrasion. A technique in which the top, superficial layer of the skin is removed, both to stimulate the production of collagen (and encourage healing) and reveal softer, smoother skin underneath. Often called a “lunchtime peel” because Microderm can be carried out so quickly – in your lunch hour – the procedure works well in areas where acne scarring is not very deep. It can also be done in conjunction with chemical peels, as it will make the chemicals seep in easier.
  • Collagen Injections. Injections of bovine-sourced or human collagen plump out the scars, making them instantly less noticeable. Advantage: works well. Disadvantage: may only last for three months; bovine collagen is not good for people with comprised immune systems; does not work on all types of scarring, such as ice pick scars, which leave a tiny hole which looks as if it has been made by an ice pick or other similar instrument.
  • Chemical Peels. A variety of chemical peels are on offer that both plump up the skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and scars, and also smooth and exfoliate to make skin look better – and reduce future occurrence of acne breakouts. Depending on the nature of your skin you can opt for a light, medium-strength or stronger peel. Just make sure you choose one that doesn’t exacerbate your skin even further!
  • Surgery. Some types of scars, such as ice pick scars, can be removed by “punching” them down during surgery, then suturing the skin back together. Or try Z-Plasty, aka zigzagplasty, where a scar is repositioned to blend in better with your face – along the natural creases of the cheek, or elsewhere.
  • Medical Tattooing. As scar tissue that is light-colored has no pigment, tattoos can infuse color to make them blend in better with the rest of your skin. Can also help scars to “relax” and re-pigment naturally. Finally, if you have only one tattoo in a not very noticeable area, ask your doctor if you can tattoo it with a pattern or design…
  • Fat Transfer. Fat is taken from other parts of your body and injected into a scar to plump it out. Remember, the fat will eventually be absorbed into the body, so you will need to repeat this time and time again to keep up the look.
  • Lotions and potions. Some people find that certain types of acne scarring reduction creams work wonders; others find they have no effect whatsoever. A lot will depend on the type of scar you have, as well as the severity of your scarring. It’s all a matter of trial-and-error…

Even the best surgeons cannot completely remodel a face so that it looks completely different – not unless you were willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars having countless operations. Indian accutane online - effective medicine for the treatment of acne.  While surgery can help get rid of the worst acne scars, you will probably still have some pitting left if your face – or your neck or back – was deeply affected by acne as a teenager.

While it may sound cliched, learning to live with yourself is perhaps the easiest, as well as safest and cheapest, way to deal with physical imperfections of any kind. If that doesn’t work for you, remember that one of the Harley Davidson mantras is “chicks love scars“. Hopefully, you can also learn to love them – or at least love yourself with them!

Colon Toxins Cleansing

March 20th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

The American diet contains high saturated fat, trans fat, and other harmful substances such as sugar, caffeine, pesticides, additive substances, and less in fruits and vegetables. These types of harmful substances are toxic. Our body’s detoxifying functions try to get rid of them everyday, when they fail it causes a disruption of hormone production, damaging our body’s detoxification organs and weakening our immune system resulting in hormone imbalance and many chronic illness consequently. In this article, we will discuss how to cleanse your colon from toxins.

1. Flax seed
Flax seed contains high amounts of omega 3 fatty acid, fiber and lignan that not only helps in controlling cholesterol in the blood stream and provides essential nutrition to our body, its fiber also helps to soften the stool and promote bowel movements for relief of constipation by removing all toxins accumulated in the colon.

2. Psyllium
Psyllium contains about 70% soluble fiber and 30% insoluble fiber. Besides having proven record in Chinese medicine in treating high levels of cholesterol, its fiber portion has been used to treat constipation by softening stools and easing bowel movements .

3. Bentonite
Bentonite is a natural clay that comes from volcanic ash. Taken internally, the adsorbent action of bentonite helps to eliminate and remove toxic material from the intestine.

4. Liquid clay
Liquid clay moves through our body and attaches to any bacteria, virus as well as toxins in our intestine and removes them out of our body as wastes resulting in improved intestinal regularity, easing chronic constipation and easing indigestion.

5. Buckthorn bark
Buckthorn bark is native to Europe and parts of western Asia. It contains anthraquinones that stimulate intestinal movement and also attracts more water to the intestines resulting in a softened stool and removing toxins accumulated in the intestine out as wastes.

6. Rhubarb root
Rhubarb root has been used in Chinese medicine in treating both constipation and diarrhea. Intake of rhubarb root helps to improve intestine tone, as well as remove toxins from the intestine.

7. Cascara sagrada
Cascara sagrada is known to tone the relaxed intestinal muscles in the digestive system. Intake of cascare sagrada helps promote the digestive process in people affected by disorders in the digestion as well as chronic constipation.

Thyroid: Parathyroid Dysfunction

Thyroid Gland

Couples with a healthy relationship communicate with each other on a regular basis. The lines of communication are always open. Healthy couples are able to tell each other when something is wrong. Healthy relationships consist of two equally committed individuals. Healthy couples have realistic expectations of each other and are not over demanding.

The activity of the thyroid gland is controlled by the hormone of the pituitary gland. The thyroid gland may be inactive or excessively active. Inactivity of the thyroid may result in the condition called cretinism which is associated with a deficiency of the thyroid gland in early childhood, and the condition called myxedema which comes on later in life. The person with myxedema has a typical face with puffy eyelids, and an apparent lack of interest in what is going on. The skin is dry and rough, the hair coarse, brittle and dry. Because the tongue and throat are swollen, the speech is slow and slurred.

Since the condition is lack of thyroid material, the treatment includes the giving of thyroid, and the dosage is adjusted according to the need of the patient and his response to the drug.

Cretinism

The lack of sufficient secretion from the thyroid gland during early life, as mentioned previously, results in delayed development which is called cretinism. If a child develops normally and then begins to show evidences of lack of thyroid the case is called “acquired hypothyroidism“. The condition may appear as a failure of the thyroid gland to grow or as a result of failure of the pituitary gland to stimulate the thyroid by sending the pituitary secretion necessary for this purpose. The latter failure is rare.

No one sign is typical of cretinism or insufficient thyroid, but a combination is well-nigh unmistakable. The child has physical and mental torpor. The circulation of the blood is poor. In fact, all the activities of the body are under par, including the muscle tone, sweating, and the activity of the bowel. The growth, including bones and teeth, hair and brain, is stunted. The skin is thickened and coarse and fluid accumulates under the skin. The cretin is sluggish and shows little interest in what goes on around him.

The child with deficient action of the thyroid responds rapidly to treatment with thyroid extract. Almost immediately there is improvement in color and warmth of the skin. Within a few weeks there is loss of weight as the body gets rid of the extra fluid. Almost immediately, growth begins again. Because of this prompt benefit there may be a tendency to give more and more thyroid, and this will have bad results as shown in heightened excitability, nervousness and a rise in the blood pressure.

The earlier a diagnosis can be made and the sooner treatment can be begun the better. Sometimes the damage to the brain by just a few months deficiency may be so severe that it is difficult if not impossible to overcome. Such children may become irritable and unmanageable after treatment, and the doctor must determine the amount of thyroid necessary to keep the child under control.

Excess Action Of The Thyroid

Although the condition called hyperthyroidism, which is due to excessive action of the thyroid gland, was first observed around 1830, a really complete understanding of the condition did not develop until 1890. Excessive action of the thyroid may occur at any age. The condition is much more frequent in women than in men. In areas in which goiter is infrequent, women may have excessive action of the thyroid gland in a proportion of four women to one man.

The exact cause of excessive action of the thyroid gland is not known, but the most frequently accepted view at this time is that the body responds to stress, either emotional, physical, or infectious, by excessive action of the pituitary gland which in turn over stimulates the thyroid gland. If this condition goes on, such symptoms may develop as bulging of the eyes, which is a part of exophthalmic goiter; and there may be enlargement of the thyroid gland, although there are cases in which the thyroid gland is enlarged without other symptoms. The person who is over stimulated by thyroid is nervous, irritable and emotionally unstable.

Since excessive action of the thyroid is due to secretion of too much hormone or glandular substance, treatment of the condition includes a number of different procedures. The certain method is removal of a portion of the thyroid gland by surgery, with or without the use of such drugs as propylthiouracil which diminish thyroid activity.

Radioiodine, which is a radioactive form of this substance, is now used to treat excessive action of the thyroid gland. In some cases excessive action of the thyroid may be so great that serious symptoms develop, including fever, an exceedingly rapid beating of the heart and even prostration.

Simple Goiter

The bulging in the throat that is due to enlargement of the thyroid gland was apparently recognized by the Chinese at least as early as 1500 B.C. Such is indicated by drawings and other historical records. Indeed, the people used to overcome the condition in the Middle Ages by eating burnt sponge and seaweed which are rich in iodine. Not until 1916, however, was the evidence accumulated that made it certain that small doses of iodine taken frequently by the patient living in areas in which there are small amounts of iodine in the soil and in the water will prevent simple goiter.

Certain substances have been recognized as having the power to stimulate goiter, but goiter caused by these substances-like thiocyanates or cabbage, which cause a lessening of thyroid hormone-is infrequent.

The chief symptoms of goiter are, of course, the enlargement and bulging in the throat due to the large size of the gland. There are cases, however, in which the enlargement becomes so great that it may even interfere with breathing or injure the voice by pressure on the nerves that go to the larynx. The prevention of such enlargement of the gland by the taking of small doses of iodine regularly during the period of childhood and adolescence is now well established. Iodized salt is now commonly used, so that the iodine is taken regularly in this manner. In cases of severe enlargement of the gland obviously removal by surgery is desirable.

Parathyroid Glands

Behind and near to the thyroid gland are other glands which are known as parathyroid glands, their chief function being control of the use of calcium and phosphorus by the body. Apparently this gland responds with secretion of its hormone when the amounts of calcium and phosphorus in the serum of the blood become insufficient. However, extracts of the parathyroid gland have been prepared and are used in cases where people apparently suffer from a lack of parathyroid hormone. The lack of this hormone is made evident by such symptoms as tremors of the body, called “tetany,” which occurs also with insufficiency of calcium. The tetany or tremors, which are like muscle spasms or cramps, are due to extra excitability of the nerves controlling the muscles.

Obviously the condition may be controlled by giving extra calcium directly into the blood or by taking large amounts of calcium by mouth. The condition may also be controlled by direct injection of the parathyroid hormone. Calcium is also controllable through the use of vitamin D or of a substance like vitamin D called dihydrotachysterol.

The action of this substance is more like the action of the parathyroid hormone than is vitamin D itself. In the treatment of this condition, the diet should be one which contains much calcium and relatively little phosphorus. The foods which are rich in calcium are milk and cheese products and the leafy green vegetables. Milk also, however, includes phosphorus, as does egg yolk, cauliflower and molasses.

As might be expected, excessive action of the parathyroid glands results in changes of the bones of the body, because the bones are largely made up of calcium. Since the parathyroid glands so definitely control the use of calcium by the body, some have thought that kidney stones might be due to some action of the parathyroid glands. This has not, however, been established with certainty. Cases of excessive action of the parathyroid gland can occur without any evident changes in the bones and, in fact, the condition may be more frequent than is now suspected. There may be excessive growth of the tissues of the parathyroid glands which can result in excessive activity.

When large amounts of extra calcium are found in the blood and with that muscular weakness, loss of appetite, and pain in the bones, and, not infrequently, excessive elimination of fluid through the kidneys, the physician suspects excessive action of the parathyroid glands.

Since vitamin D has become available as a concentrate, and since people have been taking exceedingly large doses of vitamin D to treat a variety of conditions, difficulty has occurred in recognizing the difference between excessive vitamin D in the body and excessive action of the parathyroid glands. In every case of hyperparathyroidism the possibility of surgical removal of excess tissue of the parathyroids must be considered as primary in the treatment.

Blood Alcohol Levels

March 19th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

An excessive consumption of liquor content results in the increase in someone’s blood alcohol level. For most persons who attend parties liquor is thought to be a needed element for having a good time. Blood alcohol content is a measurement used to detect how much liquor content is in someone’s blood stream. It is measured in percentages starting from 0.01 up to 0.40 or greater. Most people exhibit some form of being drunk at 0.03 percent. Once blood content has reached 0.35 percent the possibility of casualty and unconsciousness heightens. First time users are also more susceptible to becoming unconscious with as little as 15 percent. This has lead to many of our current road accidents as well as criminal offenses.

Since the early 1900s there have been many alcohol exclusion laws put into practice to deject people from drinking. The limits under which you are able to drive while drunk may differ from state to state. Blood alcohol content below 0.08 percent in America is thought to be unlawful and individuals who are charged can face stern criminal charges. Women usually are more susceptible to become intoxicated, so a female’s blood alcohol content will rise much quicker than that of males. Persons who are bigger in size, are less likely to get intoxicated, they will have half the blood alcohol content versus someone else half their size even if they drink the same quantity of liquor. An individual who is assumed to be under the influence of alcohol mainly when driving are tested with a mechanism known as a breathalyzer. Contents of saliva, urine or blood can also be taken to examine your blood alcohol level.

There are various ways to minimize your chances of getting drunk. The brand of liquor you consume as and the amount you drink at a time can increase your chances of becoming drunk. Alcohol containers provide the details on the amount of alcoholic content provided in each serving displayed as a percentage of the alcohol volume. Some alcoholic drinks have far more alcoholic levels than others, so you should lessen those that have a high content. For example wine on average has a alcohol content varying from 6 – 14 percent. Hard liquors such as whiskey, tequila, vodka and rum, usually have an alcohol content of approximately 40 percent. The alcohol percentage is documentated as half of the proof. Liqueurs‘ have an alcoholic level that ranges from 15 – 30 percent or even higher. Normal bottled beer usually has an alcohol content of about 5 percent by volume while light beer is approximately 4 percent alcohol. Other strong specialty beers and malt liquors may have alcohol levels up to 8 and 10 percent. When drinking mixed liquor try to limit your intake for each serving, as they have a variety of different liquors that have different alcoholic contents, that you might not be aware of that can get you under the influence quickly. Also watch out for cognacs work as a ‘creepers’. These beverages don’t show the effects of the alcohol while drinking but instead much later on.

Over time there have been many DWI books written to educate individuals about the seriousness of becoming intoxicated as well as driving under the influence of liquor and ways to avoid this ordeal. These books aim to educate persons about the implications of drinking not only as it relates to a legal perspective but also in regards to their physical health.

Most DWI books also talks about what legal steps you should take if you are arrested with simplified terms that give information on certain procedures and ways of defending yourself in a possible DUI case including how to employ a certified DUI attorneys. It is made so that the every day persons is able to understand some of the court procedures relating to DWUI|DUI so they are more able to legally protect themselves. Sometimes there are even illustrations of persons who have previously been in DUI cases, who have evaded being locked up.

Leukoderma

March 19th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

Vitiligo also known as leucoderma, simply means white (leuco), skin (derma); i.e. a disorder where the skin loses its normal color. The typical appearance of vitiligo is milky white de-pigmented spots. It has a tendency to start as a single spot and gradually grow in size and number. Melanin is the pigment that gives the skin its characteristic color. Vitiligo is caused by a loss of pigment in the skin, due to destruction of pigment-forming cells known as melanocytes. Patients who are stigmatized for their condition may experience depression and similar mood disorders.

The actual causes of vitiligo are not completely known and are still to be explored. Children whose parents have the disorder are more likely to develop vitiligo. Mexican pharmacy viagra – discount medications online. People with leukoderma may have premature graying of the scalp hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, and beard.

Vitiligo generally appears in one of three patterns:

1. Focal pattern – depigmentation is limited to one or only a few areas

2. Segmental pattern – depigmented patches develop on only one side of the body

3. Generalized pattern – most common. Depigmentation occurs symmetrically on both sides of the body

There are a number of ways to alter the appearance of vitiligo. The choice of therapy depends on the number, location and sizes of white patches. The treatment options can be categorized under medical, surgical, and adjunctive therapies.

MEDICAL

1. Psoralen photochemotherapy or PUVA therapy: Psoralen is a drug that contains chemicals that react with ultraviolet light to cause darkening of the skin. Psoralen can be taken by mouth (orally) or applying it to the skin (topically).

a. Topical psoralen photochemotherapy: used for people with a small number of depigmented patches affecting a limited part of the body.

b. Oral psoralen photochemotherapy: used for people with extensive vitiligo ( more than 20 percent of the body) or for people who do not respond to topical PUVA therapy.

2. Topical Steroid Therapy: Steriod creams are the simplest and safest treatment for vitiligo.

3. Lately, UVB narrowband has replaced PUVA since this treatment does not involve Psoralen. The effect of the UVB narrowband lamp is sufficient.

4. Depigmentation: It involves fading the rest of the skin on the body to match the areas that are already white. It is recommended for people who have vitiligo on more than 70% of their bodies.

SURGICAL – Autologous Skin grafts- Melanocytic Transfer-Suction Blister Epidermal Grafts

These are recommended for patients whose vitiligo has remained stable for at least 2 years. The plastic surgeon first abrades the superficial layer of the skin of white patches. Then very very thin skin grafts are harvested from the thighs by grafting handle or suction blisters. The skin grafts are then applied to the abraded areas.

The melanin producing cells of the skin graft start producing pigmentation at the new areas, thus giving a natural result. Surgical treatment is not recommended for patients who lose color (pigment) when they suffer a small cut or scrape.

Asthma Treatment Guidelines

March 19th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

Treating asthma in elderly can be more complicated and different from adults and children. One thing for sure is the medication that can be given to them is a bit more limited than adult and children. The elderly are unable to take certain medication as their weak physique can make certain side effects unbearable.

This may be true if the elderly have current long term illness like glaucoma and are taking other medication. Giving asthma medication can only interfere with the other medication and aggravate instead of helping the asthma condition. Taking too much medication at one time can also lead to liver damage in the long run. Not so good news for an already frail elderly body.

The purpose of treatment of asthma in the elderly is similar to other asthma treatment is so that the elderly can lead a normal life as soon as possible. Treatment guidelines are also similar too. Take control of the asthma first then reduce dosage to reduce side effects of medication.

Difficulties Faced by Doctor When Treating Elderly With Asthma

The difficulties that elderly face is that many of them will face problem using MDI (metered dose inhaler) if they are suffering from arthritis and or other joint related illness. They may lack the physical strength to press the canister. Measuring peak flow can prove to be a herculean task for them if they lack the strength for a forceful breath.

Inhaled corticosteroid can be given but however it must be in controlled as elderly are more susceptible side effects bruising of skin and bone damage which leads to faster osteoporosis in the elderly. Corticosteroid taken orally posed even a greater danger elderly people has a weaker digestive system and the medication digest slower. This means that the side effects are more adverse and last longer. Physician will usually reduce the dosage as soon as possible.

Doctors also have noted more adverse side effects when taking beta2 agonist. Symptoms include cardiac arrest if the elderly have already an existing heart condition. Drop in potassium levels is also noted. Elderly that are unable to bear the side effects of beta2 agonist may opt for anti-cholinergic instead.

Elderly may also have to stop beta blocker medication and take a selective agent instead. Beta blocker medications are commonly prescribed for common elderly illness like hypertension, migraine and cardiac arrhythmia. Beta receptors in the lungs calm the muscle layer in the bronchial tubes. These beta blockers impede the beta receptors in the lungs from receiving nerve signals and lead to reverse effect and constriction of the tubes occur instead.

Treating asthma for elderly can be a complicated process as doctors need to weigh in more factors than treatment for the adult and children. A good advice is that elderly have another care person that is preferably a close family member to act as a look out.

Bad Breath

March 18th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

Halitosis, or commonly known as bad breath, is a known oral disease. Having this problem one must first find out what is the cause. It is often suspected to originate from the mouth but other cases are severely complicated, such as stomach problems. Other possible causes are respiratory problems, sinus and tonsil problems. Although not an alarming disease, it can make your interaction to others very limited and can decrease your self confidence. Let me give you some health advice on how to deal with bad breath naturally.

1. Dental health must be your priority. Always visit your dentist 4 times a year to ensure that your teeth are bacteria free. Most bad breath comes from a very unclean mouth, so make sure to have teeth cleaning every time you visit your dentist.

2. Brush your teeth and tongue after a meal. It is advisable to clean your mouth every time you consume any food especially junk foods and sodas. You may also use dental floss and mouth wash to eliminate those mouth bacteria that resides in your tongue and gums.

3. Always drink water. Water can also help flush those bacteria out of your mouth every after meals. Drinking enough water helps avoid having a halitosis.

4. Chew a bubble gum. Chewing can help saliva flowing all the time making your breath smelling good. Choose sugar less gum to avoid tooth decay.

5. Avoid foods that you know can cause you halitosis. Foods like garlic, ginger and onions can make your breath so bad but these vegetables are high in antioxidants. Avoid junk foods and meat because these are proven to make your breath worst. Eat celery and carrots as these foods acts as a mouth cleaner.

6. Don’t miss breakfast. Study shows that people who skip breakfast are most likely to have stinky breath. An empty stomach produce bad odors that goes out through our mouth causing bad breath. Don’t full your stomach either because same reaction will take place.

7. Avoid too much alcohol. Moderate your alcohol intake. Rhum and beers are known cause of halitosis. So limit your alcohol intake.

8. Breathing is a good therapy for bad breath. Always take time to breath through the mouth for several minutes. This will help your respiratory problems that is sometimes cause bad breath.

9. Don’t smoke. You probably know that smoking cause bad breath. Do I have to say more?

Bad breath can be prevented by taking care of our oral health. Be clean and know what foods that can help prevent bad breath. Having a fresh breath all the time is one way to boost self confidence. You can interact and handle yourself effectively when you feel clean and fresh inside and out.

Alcohol Treatment Program

March 18th, 2010 Dan Hicks No comments

Alcohol and drug dependence appears to be an epidemic in the United States. Alcohol consumption is a social norm and legal and illegal drugs alike are incredibly easy to access. As a result of the enjoyable mind altering effect and the easy acquisition of substances such as these, abuse and dependence are more commonplace than one might expect.

So, the question is, where does one go for help if substance abuse has become an issue? The large majority of the professional mental and physical health community has become accustomed to shipping every alcohol or drug abuser off to a 12-step meeting. How effective is the 12-step methodology as a 1 size fits all alcoholism treatment program, though?

Statistical research on 12-step programs is hard to come by; primarily because the 12-step programs do not regularly keep track of their own success or failure rates. However, the little bit of research that has been executed suggests that programs like AA have somewhere between a 5-15% success rate. This means that of those who attend a 12-step program as a solution to their substance abuse issues, only 5-15% of them will stick with it and stay sober for more than 1 year.

Speculative theory will suggest many different reasons for the low success rates of alcohol treatment programs like AA. I personally feel that there are a few primary components that contribute to such low success rates:

1. Religious/cult like tenants

AA spawned from a movement known as the Oxford Group which was popular in the early 1900’s. The Oxford Group was an evangelical Christian organization that specialized in healing people’s vices through “Christ”.

While allowing its members to choose a “god of their own understanding“, the 12-step program still revolves around the idea that only a spiritual awakening through god is sufficient to cure an addiction and remains spiritual in nature. This rules out the success of anyone that holds an Atheist or Agnostic viewpoint and also deters others that really have no opinion on the matter but definitely do not believe that “god” is going to heal them.

12-step programs also maintain some eerily cult-like tenants. They mandate lifelong membership, ritualistic practices (meetings, prayers, etc.), renunciation of one’s ability to govern or fix their own life, semi-devotion/obedience to a “sponsor”, and harsh criticism for pursuing other avenues of success or questioning the effectiveness of the 12-steps.

2. Definition of Success

The only definition of success in 12-step programs is entire, lifelong, abstinence from any mind altering substances what-so-ever. This is, in my opinion, a fairly narrow sighted definition of success.

Many people that end up seeking help for substance abuse issues have not reached a point where entire, lifelong, abstinence is the only viable option. For folks like this, there are many different markers for success. Learning how to moderate alcohol consumption, reduced frequency and quantity, executing planned periods of abstinence, or setting up and staying within a set of self-defined guidelines and parameters for their alcohol consumption can all act as rules of success.

For those that are not able to moderate their alcohol consumption, then abstinence should be their goal. However, there are many different ways to achieve abstinence without committing themselves to a group of people and a belief system for the remainder of their lives.

3. The Disease Model

Although Addiction is recognized as a medical disease by the AMA and many mental and physical healthcare professionals, there are many people that feel this proposition is absurd, including me.
Drinking alcohol and using drugs is a choice that an individual makes. It is not the same thing as cancer where the host does not have any choice in the matter.

Even when people get sober through a 12-step program and subscribe to the tenants of the disease model, they fail to realize that, ultimately, they had to make a decision to stop using drugs and alcohol in order to get well. If you can make a choice to alter the effects of a certain behavior, it’s not a disease.

I personally feel that the disease model and the theory of powerlessness contribute to more failure than success. It gives many folks a justification and excuse to continue destructive behavior because they can always use the oh-so-famous tag line

“I’m sick. I can’t control it. It’s not my fault”.

Successful alternative treatment methods promote the idea that addiction is the result of choices and can only be cured by making new, healthier choices. This tends to work for those that can’t find a place in 12-step programs and don’t believe in the disease model.

I would like to make it clear that I am not in opposition to AA or related 12-step programs. For the small percentage of people that find success there, I would never want to discredit or take that away from them. I do however feel that there should be more widespread awareness to alternative alcoholism treatment program methodologies such as harm reduction, moderation, abstinence, etc.

In my humble opinion, an alcoholism treatment program should define success by the overall improvement of the patient’s quality of life; not by some preconceived idea that abstinence through god as the only way.

American Diabetes Diet

A healthy diet is very important to everyone. Especially for diabetics, a healthy and well controlled diet is highly recommended. Health experts in the United States have noted the importance of following a strict American diabetes diet. The type of food a diabetic eats can either be helpful or detrimental. Because it can turn out into a matter of life and death, an American diabetes diet is very crucial.

Diabetes refers to a health condition where a person’s body is unable to metabolize the glucose. A person also cannot efficiently maintain and control blood sugar levels as most people do. Previously, diabetes is a rare case. However, with the drastic transformation in the way people eat and what constitutes their diet, the condition is now prevalent. Nearly all parts of the world have their own case of diabetes. In different sectors and in almost every age range, there is a case of diabetes. Because of the alarming rates, health experts are continuously trying to mitigate, control and help people to deal with diabetes. The relevance of diet to a person’s health condition became extremely relevant in the treatment and management of diabetes. As diabetes has no absolute cure, following an American diabetes diet is the best thing to do.

The Ideal American diabetes Diet

Just like everyone else, a diabetic person also needs the same amount of nutrients each day. The only difference is that the type of food a diabetic eats should not increase blood sugar levels. Weight is also more controlled for diabetics. Whereas people generally need to take care of their weight, diabetics need to make sure their weight remains within the safe zone. Exercise is very important. Another difference of the American diabetes diet with the average diet is that it is tailored to match a diabetic medication. The diet, exercise and the medication all help maintain blood sugar levels. The control of the body’s glucose levels makes diabetes a more manageable health condition.

Calorie Limit

A diabetic diet usually has a calorie limit. For instance, there is the 1200 calorie diet and the 1800 calorie diet. Excluding foods that can trigger an increase in blood sugar levels, any food combination should do so long as the total calories for the whole day do not exceed 1200 or 1800. Some of the more common foods included in a diabetic diet include: cereals, vegetables, yogurt and a piece or two of fruit.

Alternative Sweeteners

Ideally, a diet for diabetics should be sugarless. Fortunately for technological and scientific advancements, there are now artificial sweeteners. These artificial sweeteners are designed to provide the same flavor as sugar does without the added calorie and glucose intake. The most important thing in a diabetic diet is to keep glucose intake in check. To make sure that the diet is correct, it is necessary to consult a doctor and a professional nutritionist.
